Gustafson wins again, Ogden Raptors open road trip with Tuesday win at Idaho Falls

Shane Gustafson won his third consecutive start, Carmine Lane hit a grand slam and the Ogden Raptors opened a six-game road trip with a 12-5 victory Tuesday night in Idaho Falls.
Like he did last time out in Idaho Falls (during a 4-2 Ogden series win) on June 19, Gustafson allowed two earned runs on six hits over five innings to pick up the victory. He exited the game with a 9-2 lead, courtesy of Lane’s slam in the top of the fifth.
Newcomer Ethan Stephens pitched a scoreless sixth for Ogden (21-16), while closer Nik Cardinal kept his ERA under one (0.96) by pitching around two hits and a walk in the ninth to keep Idaho Falls (24-13) from scoring.
The Raptors handed Chukars starter Gary Grosjean (7-1) his first loss of the season. Ogden went up 5-0 through two innings on the strength of a two-RBI double from Connor Bagnieski and run-scoring singles from Cole Jordan and Chris Sargent.
Lane’s four-run four-bagger in the fifth put nine earned runs on Grosjean’s ledger, the most he’s allowed this season.
Chris Sargent hit a solo homer in the sixth for Ogden, his 13th of the season (third in the Pioneer League) while running his RBI total to 63, tied for first in the league. Kenny Oyama added an RBI single to put the visitors ahead 11-2.
Lane ran his RBI total to five with a run-scoring single in the ninth. Sargent led the way, hitting 3 for 5, while Bagnieski, Lane, Oyama, True Fontenot and Damian Stone each had two hits.
Idaho Falls second baseman Garrett Ostrander hit 3 for 4 with two RBIs in the Chukars’ leadoff spot.
The two teams finish the series at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, then Ogden rides on to Great Falls, Montana, for three games Friday through Sunday.
Elsewhere, while Idaho Falls and Rocky Mountain (21-15) slide away from first place, margins slimmed for Ogden as Missoula and Oakland both took victories to move to 27-10, remaining six games ahead of the Raptors with 11 to go in the first half. Ogden finishes the half with six home games against Missoula next week.
