Sargent’s late sock spoiled as Ogden Raptors split series with Boise Hawks

Ogden Raptors outfielder Kenny Oyama (18) slides to home plate as Northern Colorado Owlz catcher Omar Veloz attempts to tag him on Sunday, Jun 29, 2025, at Lindquist Field in Ogden.

Chris Sargent nearly played hero again for the Ogden Raptors but the Boise Hawks spoiled the slugger’s late three-run sock and won 11-9 on Sunday afternoon to split the six-game series and send Ogden to a three-game skid to follow the Raptors’ three-game win streak.

In a game Ogden (31-28, 5-7 second half) mostly trailed, Sargent’s final turn in the order came with two on and one out following Connor Bagnieski’s RBI single and Boise (35-25, 5-7) leading 9-6 in the bottom of the eighth.

Sargent, league-leader in RBIs and second in homers, played Sunday as designated hitter and launched a home run to left field, tying the game at 9-9. That gives Sargent 23 home runs and 94 RBIs for the season. After taking Saturday off, the Sunday shot also gives him seven homers in his last nine games.

But the Raptors couldn’t turn that into a win or even a tie and a Knockout Round competition. Jake Hjelle doubled in the top of the ninth and the Hawks converted with two outs against Ogden closer Nik Cardinal. Paul Myro IV singled to score Hjelle and retake the lead, and Braxton Turner doubled home Myro for good measure.

True Fontenot led off the bottom of the ninth with a double but the Raptors couldn’t bring him around or get a rally going.

Noah Marcelo hit 4 for 4 and scored four runs from the leadoff spot, including a solo homer, to lead Boise at the plate. Jeremiah Begora drove in three. Noah McBride, who was briefly on Ogden’s roster this season, got the save by striking out Cole Jordan and Kenny Oyama to end the game.

Bagnieski hit 3 for 5 to lead Ogden. Oyama (2 for 6) was the Raptors’ only other multi-hit batter.

MORE HOME GAMES

With the Pioneer League taking control of the Northern Colorado Owlz and moving the team to Colorado Springs, a conflict with the now-named Sky Sox and the Rocky Mountain Vibes (also in Colorado Springs) means Ogden’s previously scheduled road series against the Owlz/Sky Sox will now be played in Ogden.

The Raptors and Sky Sox will play at Lindquist Field from July 29 through Aug. 3. Ogden will play as the visiting team. Tickets are $5 general admission. Game times remain at 6:30 p.m. with a 1 p.m. Sunday matinee.

HOME RUN LIST

With 36 games left in the season, Sargent is climbing Ogden’s franchise home runs list. Below is the top of Ogden’s leaderboard, with the historical note that total games jumped from 76 to 96 in 2021 with the Pioneer League’s forced independence.
