First-inning burst gives Ogden Raptors third straight win in Idaho Falls

Standard-Examiner
The Ogden Raptors provided support for starter Shane Gustafson before he ever took the mound and scored all the runs they’d need in the first inning on the way to a 13-5 victory Thursday night at Idaho Falls, marking a third straight victory for the Raptors halfway through the six-game series.
Ogden (14-13) shortstop Elliott Good hit 4 for 6 with three RBIs in the leadoff spot, and two of those hits came in the first inning. He set the table with a single to start the game. Chris Sargent singled in two runs and scored on a True Fontenot double, Carmine Lane plated two more with a single and Good finished the rally with a single to score Lane.
That put the Raptors up 6-0 and ended the night for Idaho Falls (17-9) starter Garrett Van Deventer after one frame, helping the Chukars to a fourth straight defeat.
Gustafson allowed two hits in the first four innings, facing one over the minimum thanks to a double play. Good doubled in Kenny Oyama in the third and singled in Kyler Stancato in the top of the fifth, so by the time Idaho Falls got to Gustafson, Ogden already led 9-0. The Chukars scored two runs on four hits in the fifth but Gustafson comfortably picked up his second win as a starter by exiting with a 9-2 lead.
Ogden added runs in the sixth, seventh and ninth to pile on. Pioneer League veteran Noah McBride (Boise, Missoula) threw an easy sixth after joining the Raptors this week but found trouble in the seventh, giving up three runs including a solo homer to Chukars designated hitter Gabriel Vasquez.
Shawn Triplett and Jestin Jones brought home the final 2 1/3 innings for Ogden’s bullpen, allowing three hits and walking two. Triplett struck out one with the bases loaded in the eighth, then Jones took over and got an infield groundout to end Idaho Falls’ biggest threat.
Lane batted 4 for 5 with three RBIs and Sargent drove in three runs as well. Cole Jordan hit 3 for 6 and scored two runs.
The two teams play again at 7:05 p.m. Friday and Saturday, then close the series at 2 p.m. Sunday. Ogden returns home Tuesday to host Northern Colorado for six game.
