Sargent 9, Chukars 8: Ogden catcher slugs Raptors to series win at Idaho Falls

Chris Sargent brought his bat to the matinee. The Raptors catcher hit 4 for 5 with two homers, two doubles and nine RBIs, outscoring the Chukars by himself in a 21-8 Ogden victory to cap the series.
A walk, an error and a Simon Baumgardt home run put Idaho Falls (19-10) up 3-0 in the first. That came against Ogden starter Chase Chatman, who won Tuesday’s series opener and started again Sunday. But Chatman only allowed two hits in five innings; he did walk seven but only one of four runs on his ledger were earned.
Sargent, meanwhile, took over at the plate. Teammates set the table in the third before the catching captain hit a two-run homer to put Ogden (15-15) ahead 4-3. Sargent’s turn came up again in the fourth and he hit a bases-clearing, three-RBI double as the lead extended to 9-3.
Then again in the fifth, the biggest shot. Sargent socked a grand slam, and Kyler Stancato soon followed with a solo homer, to put the Raptors ahead 15-3.
Idaho Falls second baseman Benjamin Rosengard hit a three-run homer off Ogden’s Cameron Edmondson in the eighth for a 17-7 score but that’s as close as it would get.
Connor Bagnieski also homered for the Raptors. Outfielder Kenny Oyama manned the leadoff spot well Sunday, batting 4 for 6 with two doubles and three runs scored. Stancato also doubled, hit 4 for 6 and drove in three. Dylan Wilkinson added a 4-for-6 night with two RBIs and three runs scored.
Jestin Jones and Christian Ciuffetelli pitched scoreless sixth and seventh innings to hold Ogden’s big lead. Idaho Falls used seven pitchers and only Luke Hempel in the eighth inning kept the Raptors from scoring. Ogden outhit Idaho Falls 23-7.
The Raptors return home to Lindquist Field for a six-game series against Northern Colorado (5-24) beginning at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Missoula and Oakland currently lead the Pioneer League at 21-9, with Yuba-Sutter (20-10), Idaho Falls (19-10), Rocky Mountain (19-10) and Boise (19-11) all within 2 games. Ogden is in seventh place and is six games back with 18 to go in the first half.
SAT: IDAHO FALLS 27, OGDEN 13
In a game the Chukars led 26-6 through six innings, four homers, five doubles and 25 total hits led the home team to a lopsided win Saturday night.
Position player and occasional pitcher Kyler Stancato had the best night among Ogden arms, allowing one run on three hits over the final two innings. Raptors starter Ryan Sleeper allowed five runs on seven hits in three innings to open the game.
Simon Baumgardt, Tyler Wyatt and Garrett Ostrander each had four hits for Idaho Falls. Wyatt homered and drove in four.
Stancato also hit 3 for 6 at the plate for Ogden, scoring three runs. Carmine Lane hit 3 for 4.
FRI: IDAHO FALLS 10, OGDEN 6
Cole Jordan and Chris Sargent both homered but it wasn’t enough to come back in late innings.
Evan Blum and Kenny Oyama hit RBI doubles in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead for Ogden. But Idaho Falls answered in the bottom half with a Jacob Shanks two-run homer and Spencher Rich two-RBI single to take a 4-3 lead, and the Chukars led the rest of the way.
Rolando Gutierrez Rosario took the loss for the Raptors, allowing five earned runs on eight hits in four innings. Gary Grosjean got the win for the Chukars, giving up six earned runs on 10 hits over six innings, striking out six and walking two.
Shanks hit 2 for 4 with three RBIs to lead IF. Connor Bagnieski led Ogden by batting 3 for 4.
