Ogden Raptors True Fontenot (28) and Maikol Perez (51) celebrate scoring runs on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at Lindquist Field in Ogden.

OGDEN — A crowd of 3,096 fans got two for the price of one in classic Pioneer Baseball League action Saturday night at Lindquist Field.

A marathon eighth inning played out as a game within the high-scoring game, featuring two ejections, two dugout warnings, 24 total batters and 13 runs in the penultimate frame.

When the dust settled, Ogden had won the inning 7-6 and therefore took the game by a score of 19-15 over visiting Northern Colorado, giving the Raptors six straight wins and five consecutive over the Owlz, who took their ninth consecutive defeat.

The Raptors go for the sweep at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Ogden (20-15) trailed all night before Kyler Stancato and Chris Sargent each sent three-run homers over the fence in the sixth inning to put the home team ahead 12-8.

With a 12-9 score, Raptors utility man Cole Jordan grounded into a 5-2-3 double play with the bases loaded to keep Ogden from extending the lead in the bottom of the seventh, and it soon looked like that would prove costly.

The Owlz (5-29), making the Raptors sweat for the first time this week, tallied four singles around a strikeout in the top of the eighth inning to pull to within 12-11. Lefty reliever Cameron Edmondson appeared to get Ogden out of the inning with the lead on a 6-4-3 double play grounder but NoCo shortstop TJ McKenzie was called safe at first base.

A sprinting Raptors manager Evan Parker was ejected fairly quickly after arriving near first base to protest the call. Still, with the game tied 12-12, the Owlz drew two walks to push across another run and a subbing Nik Cardinal surrendered a two-run single. Suddenly, Northern Colorado led 15-12.

But Ogden answered in the bottom of the eighth, with True Fontenot and Kenny Oyama singling and doubling to get it started. Two walks and a hit-by-pitch from Adam Wibert, plunking Ogden’s Stancato, brought the score to 15-14.

Jordan, playing second base Saturday instead of his usual left field, had a chance to redeem himself after the seventh-inning double play. He did, cracking a lining double to the centerfield fence, eventually scoring all three runners on the throw in to put the Raptors up 17-15. Jordan scored on a Connor Bagnieski single and three batters later, Damian Stone walked with the bases loaded to mark the final tally.

In between 18-15 and 19-15, Wibert had nearly hit Fontenot in the second baseman’s second at-bat of the inning, then did come high and tight again, nailing Fontenot square in the helmet. Wibert’s reaction indicated it was likely not intentional, and he patted his own chest and nodded his head after umpires conferred and ejected him from the game.

After 24 batters came to the plate in the eighth, only three did in the ninth. Cardinal sat the Owlz in order to quickly slam the door on the victory.

Northern Colorado led 5-0 through two innings after first baseman Christian Hall, who hit two solo homers Friday, went yard for two runs in the first inning Saturday.

Ogden cut its deficit to 7-6 in the fourth with a Walker Hultgren RBI double and Stancato singling in Carmine Lane.

Stancato, Jordan, Sargent and Lane each had three hits for Ogden. Stancato drove in five, and Jordan and Sargent each had four RBIs. Ogden outhit NoCo 19-13.

Usually strong Raptors lefty Chase Chatman struck out five in his four-inning start but allowed seven earned runs on six hits and four walks.

The Owlz had Caleb Reyes in line for the win leading 8-6 in the middle of the sixth, but Reyes recorded no outs in the sixth, allowed the Stancato homer to give Ogden a 9-8 lead and two of Sargent’s three on his three-run blast went to Reyes as well. So the visiting starter ultimately gave up 11 earned runs on 13 hits in five (plus) innings.

Starting at $4.32/week.
