Pitchers’ duel turns into dueling rallies as Ogden Raptors beat Yuba-Sutter 8-7

Ogden Raptors pitcher Shane Gustafson delivers a pitch against Glacier on Sept. 8, 2024, at Lindquist Field in Ogden.OGDEN — Two starting pitchers dueled, both seemed to stay in the game one inning too long, and Ogden and Yuba-Sutter broke open the scoring to trad rallies in the final innings until one team had the final say.
The Raptors got the final word with a Connor Bagnieski RBI single in the bottom of the eighth and Nik Cardinal pitching a quick 1-2-3 top of the ninth, giving the home team an 8-7 victory over the High Wheelers in front of 3,856 fans Friday night at Lindquist Field.
Shane Gustafson made his first start in two years and looked good doing it. Though his longest outing last season as a Raptor was four innings, Friday the right-hander was perfect through three complete and had a no-hitter through 4 2/3 innings.
Gustafson threw just 26 pitches in the first three innings and, after surrending his first single in the fifth, returned in the sixth with a 1-2-3 breeze and with Ogden leading 2-0.
But in the top of the seventh, Yuba-Sutter (7-3) first baseman Gio Brusa ended the shutout with only his team’s second hit, tucking a solo homer just inside the right-field fair pole to lead off the frame and make it 2-1. Gustafson walked Cooper Hext and River Orsak doubled to score him for a 2-2 ballgame.
Lefty Cameron Edmondson took the ball there and gave up two RBI singles. Suddenly, the High Wheelers led 4-2 and Gustafson went from a cruising one-hitter to being in line for the loss.
But there were plenty more runs left in this one. In the bottom of the seventh, Carmine Lane singled and Kenny Oyama doubled to get things going for the Raptors (5-5), but Oyama was then caught off second on a Damian Stone grounder in what could’ve been an important, game-deciding out when all was said and done.
That’s because Oyama would’ve scored on the next play when Cole Jordan doubled off the left-field wall; Lane did score, and Stone too on a Bagnieski sacrifice fly to make it 4-4 through seven.
Edmondson got Kirkland Banks to pop out to open the top of the eighth and curiously chose that time to demonstratively talk trash as Banks jogged the baseline in what has already been a testy series — dugouts emptied twice (with no actual fights) Thursday and some pleasantries were exchanged after the final out in Tuesday’s series opener.
Yuba-Sutter then drew a walk, hit three straight singles and then a sacrifice fly against Edmondson to take a 6-4 lead. Cardinal’s night didn’t start well, taking over for Edmondson, hitting a batter and then dropping a throw back from the catcher for an error to put the High Wheelers up 7-4.
Ogden was game to answer. Visiting pitcher Jack Zalasky got the final out of the seventh but couldn’t get there in the eighth; he surrendered a leadoff double to Elliott Good and True Fontenot followed with a bloop single to get the Raptors’ final rally going. Carter Mize hit a sacrifice fly to score Good to make it 7-5 and Zalasky hit a batter before his night was done.
High Wheelers pitcher Andrew LaCour couldn’t stop the rally. Ogden’s Oyama singled to load the bases, Good scored on a wild pitch, and Stone hit a sac fly to score Fontenot and tie it 7-7. Two batters later, Bagnieski punched a two-out single to right, scoring Oyama as the game-winner and setting up Cardinal for the quick ninth.
Orsak and Parker Coddou each drove in two for Yuba-Sutter. For Ogden, Bagnieski had two RBIs and Lane scored two runs.
The two teams play the fifth game of the series at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
