Ogden Raptors win 3 straight to open series with Boise, improve playoff odds

Ogden Raptors player Cole Jordan (3) celebrates in the dugout after scoring against Yuba-Sutter on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at Lindquist Field in Ogden. The Ogden Raptors are close to clinching a playoff berth after claiming three straight victories over the visiting Boise Hawks to start the final series of the Pioneer Baseball League regular season.
Ogden (51-41, 25-20 second half) went 1-6 over seven games to cast doubt on the team’s playoff push but used home runs Thursday to rally past Boise (46-47, 16-29) and eliminate the Hawks from playoff contention.
The Raptors finish the regular season Thursday through Sunday at Lindquist Field. That includes Saturday’s Fan Appreciation Night; a ticket to Saturday’s game gets a person admission to a pregame concert (4-6 p.m.), flag ceremonies by the Major Brent Taylor Foundation (6:15 p.m.), the night’s baseball game (6:30 p.m.), moments to commemorate military members and police and first responders, a commemorative magazine, and a nighttime DJ with music from the O-Town Beach Club as the game ends.
(Editor’s note: How the playoff race and berths shape up are to the best of the writer’s knowledge based on league policy; the Pioneer League has not publicly provided updates to playoff scenarios to clarify the race for fans or media.)
This week’s results have also pushed Rocky Mountain (46-45, 24-20) out of the playoff picture.
Ogden’s playoff qualification needs two steps — one the Raptors control, one they do not.
First, Oakland (71-22, 34-11) and Missoula (62-30, 29-15) clinched playoff berths by finishing 1-2 in the first half and are currently 1-2 in the second half. Missoula is 2 1/2 games ahead of Billings (46-47, 27-18) in the second-half standings.
So for Ogden, Missoula must hold on to its second-place position in the second-half standings to keep Billings from qualifying. Missoula defeated Yuba-Sutter on Thursday to make that a one-game proposition: any Missoula win or Billings loss locks Missoula into second place for the second half. (Likely, Missoula needs to win once more because Billings, winners of nine straight, are playing lowly Colorado Springs, who is 21-70 overall.)
If that happens, the league’s final two playoff berths go to the teams with the third- and fourth-best overall records. Idaho Falls (54-39, 27-19) is locked into a third-place overall finish and, because IF only has two games left, cannot overtake Missoula in the second-half standings.
So, that leaves the race for fourth place. After Thursday, Ogden is three games ahead of Yuba-Sutter (48-44) in overall record with three left to play. Yuba-Sutter owns the head-to-head tiebreaker. Any Ogden win or Yuba-Sutter loss clinches fourth place for the Raptors.
Clear as mud? Simply put, winning three straight has significantly improved Ogden’s playoff odds, and chances are now very good.
THURS: OGDEN 13, BOISE 6
