Ogden raptors pitcher Nico Saltaformaggio winds up to throw against the Oakland Ballers on Saturday, June 14, 2025, at Lindquist Field in Ogden. The Ogden Raptors have one returning player staking an early claim as the team’s pitching ace two weeks into the season.
Right-handed starter Nico Saltaformaggio is 3-0 with a 1.80 ERA and was named the Pioneer Baseball League’s pitcher of the week for May 26-31.
The Raptors went 2-4 in a home set against the Missoula Paddleheads during the week. Both victories came when Saltaformaggio started, bookending the series with wins Tuesday and Sunday, combining for a 0.64 ERA with 11 strikeouts in 14 innings.
Saltaformaggio went seven innings in each start. In the opener, a 9-3 win, he allowed one unearned run on four hits, striking out four and walking zero. In the Sunday finale, a 17-10 victory, he allowed one earned run on seven hits while striking out seven and walking one.
For the season, he has 18 strikeouts to two walks and allows a 0.90 WHIP (walks and hits per inning).
Meanwhile, Ogden (5-8) won consecutive games for the first time this season by taking the Tuesday opener of a six-game road series at Idaho Falls in a 22-16 marathon of 3 hours and 52 minutes.
The Raptors recovered from an eight-run deficit after starter Ryan Radkey allowed 10 earned runs on eight hits and four walks. Relief pitcher Dylan Gardner eventually got the win, following Radkey with three no-hit innings, allowing one baserunner (a walk) while striking out two.
A Colson Lawrence solo homer in the fifth cut Ogden’s deficit to 10-4 but Gardner’s steady pitching performance helped the Raptors get to the sixth inning and past Idaho Falls (1-11) starter Ian Lanik.
A 10-run sixth began with a hit-by-pitch and two walks with the bases loaded; a two-run double from Lawrence tied the game 10-10 and Chase Valentine tripled with the bases loaded to put Ogden ahead 14-10.
Valentine and first baseman Giuseppe Ferraro-Nahr each drove in five runs for the Raptors. Ferraro-Nahr hit 4 for 4 with a homer and scored four runs. Lawrence hit 4 for 6 with a home run and two doubles.
The Chukars used seven pitchers to get through the week’s first game. The series continues Wednesday through Sunday in Idaho Falls.
