Memphis forward Jaren Jackson Jr. (8) posts up against Utah forward Kyle Filipowski (22) during an NBA game Dec. 23, 2025, in Salt Lake City. While NBA circles await possible news around Giannis Antetokounmpo and new rumors swirling around James Harden ahead of Thursday’s deadline, the Utah Jazz jumped into trade waters to land a potential star frontcourt player to pair with Lauri Markkanen.
Utah has swapped four players with the Memphis Grizzlies, ESPN was first to report Tuesday, to acquire 26-year-old forward Jaren Jackson Jr.
Jackson is a two-time All-Star and was named the NBA’s defensive player of the year in 2023. In his eighth NBA season, all with Memphis, he’s averaging 19.2 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in 45 games. He was a 22-points-per-game scorer in each of the previous two years.
Jackson averaged an NBA-best 3.0 blocks per game and a career-high 6.8 rebounds per contest the year he won DPOY. After this season, he has three years and $151 million left on his current five-year contract.
Utah is sending two young players and two veterans to now-rebuilding Memphis, according to multiple reports. Rookie guard Walter Clayton Jr. (6.8 points, 3.2 assists) and third-year swingman Taylor Hendricks (4.9 points, 3.0 rebounds) are headed to the Grizzlies along with 12th-year guard Kyle Anderson (7.1 points, 3.3 rebounds, 3.1 assists) and 10th-year forward Georges Niang (injured this season).
Joining Jackson on the way to the Jazz: seventh-year guard John Konchar (3.2 points), fifth-year center Jock Landale (11.3 points, 6.5 rebounds) and fourth-year guard Vince Williams Jr. (8.0 points, 4.4 assists, 4.0 rebounds).
ESPN reports the Jazz are also sending three future first-round draft picks to the Grizzlies. That transaction makes Memphis the NBA leader in first-round picks with 13.
Synergy reports Jackson has shot 41% on spot-up 3s this season and 51% in one-on-one situations.
An SB Nation writer gave the Jazz a B+ grade for starting to speed up its rebuild with eyes on one more top lottery pick this summer, and the Grizzlies an A- for being honest about their current place and attempting to set up a trade to ship out Ja Morant.
