Utah coach Kyle Whittingham, right, and Weber State coach Jay Hill shake hands before a game Sept. 2, 2021, in Salt Lake City. The expected and reported interest from Kyle Whittingham in bringing Jay Hill to Michigan appears to be concluding with the former colleagues reuniting for the first time in 12 years.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported Thursday morning on social media site X that Hill “has officially agreed to become Michigan’s defensive coordinator.”
Whittingham coached at the University of Utah for 32 seasons, including 21 as head coach. He was Hill’s defensive coordinator in 1998-99 when Hill played cornerback for the Utes, then hired Hill to coach at Utah for 13 seasons.
Hill left Utah in 2014 to be the head coach at Weber State, where he became the program’s most successful coach over nine seasons, including four conference championships and one trip to the national semifinals. BYU hired Hill away to be defensive coordinator and associate head coach, where Hill has worked for the past three seasons.
Whittingham, meanwhile, stepped down on Dec. 12 as Utah’s head coach, expected to hand the reins to Morgan Scalley after the Utes played Wednesday in the Las Vegas Bowl. But by Dec. 26, Whittingham was introduced as Michigan’s next head coach and rumors began to swirl for which BYU and Utah assistant coaches he might want with him in Ann Arbor.
The dominoes will begin falling for both programs.
Whittingham said Thursday morning on ESPN’s New Year’s Day edition of College GameDay that offensive coordinator Jason Beck will go with him to Michigan. (Beck is a former BYU quarterback whose first staff college job was to coach quarterbacks at Weber State.)
CBS reporter Matt Zenitz reported Thursday that offensive line coach Jim Harding, tight ends coach Freddie Whittingham, receivers coach Micah Simon, and offensive analyst Koy Detmer Jr. are also leaving Utah for Whittingham’s staff at Michigan.
Former Weber State linebacker and longtime coach Colton Swan will become Utah’s defensive coordinator, KSL’s Josh Furlong reports. Swan coached at WSU for 15 years and has coached linebackers at Utah for the last seven seasons.
