FOOTBALL COACH MOVES CONTINUE

The coaching staff shakeups started with the domino of Kyle Whittingham’s hire at Michigan continue on several coaching staffs in the state of Utah.

The University of Utah officially announced that seven-year linebackers coach Colton Swan, the former Weber State player and coach, is taking over the Utes’ defensive coordinator role. But on the offensive side, new head coach Morgan Scalley has taken Kevin McGiven from Utah State. McGiven was Utah State’s OC in 2025 and has 17 years calling offenses or coaching quarterbacks in Division I.

To replace McGiven at USU, Bronco Mendenhall has called on a longtime colleague. Robert Anae, Mendenhall’s offensive coordinator at BYU and Virginia, will now call plays for the Aggies.

Elsewhere on Scalley’s staff, former first-round draft pick Jordan Gross is returning to Salt Lake City to coach offensive line for the Utes. Gross played 1999-2002 at Utah and was taken eighth overall by Carolina, where he played his entire 11-year NFL career. Gross has recently been the head coach at Fruitland High School (Idaho), where he coached incoming Utah freshman lineman and five-star recruit Kelvin Obot.

Scalley has also hired Chad Bumphis to coach receivers; Bumphis coached at Utah in 2021-22 and has been at Mississippi State for three seasons.
