Around Utah sports: Germany selects Mammoth wing Peterka for Olympics

The 2026 Winter Olympics will be held in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, from Feb. 6-22.
Peterka, 23, has recorded 29 points in 43 games during his first season with the Mammoth. Peterka is a native of Munich and will represent Germany as an Olympian the first time.
Forward Clayton Keller (USA), goaltender Karel Vejmelka (Czechia) defenseman Olli Määttä (Finland) are other Mammoth players set to compete in the Olympics.
Football staff changes continue
Assistant coaching staffs at BYU and Utah continue to take shape after former Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham was hired at Michigan and got BYU defensive coordinator Jay Hill to follow him while Morgan Scalley took over the head job for the Utes.
At BYU, Kalani Sitake announced he’s promoted Kelly Poppinga to defensive coordinator. Poppinga is a former BYU linebacker who has coached at BYU, Virginia and Boise State, returning to BYU in 2022.
Sione Pouha, BYU’s defensive backs coach, is promoted to assistant head coach.
BYU also hired former Southern Utah head coach Demario Warren to coach cornerbacks. Warren has coached cornerbacks at Boise State for the last four seasons. He replaces Jernaro Gilford, who Whittingham hired to join the staff at Michigan.
At Utah, Scalley has hired Inoke Breckterfield to coach defensive ends and Luke Wells as tight ends coach. Most recently, Breckterfield coached defensive line at Baylor for two seasons and Washington for two more. Wells most recently coached tight ends and Kansas State and Texas Tech.
Scalley also promoted longtine cornerbacks coach and former Utah player Sharieff Shah to associate head coach and running backs coach and former BYU player Mark Atuaia to assistant head coach.
Utah women beat Kansas
After trailing at halftime, the Utah women’s basketball team surged in the third quarter to snag a 62-59 win over Kansas in the historic Allen Fieldhouse on Wednesday in Lawrence, Kansas.
Utah is now 12-4 overall on the season and 3-1 in Big 12 play. The Utes have won nine out of the last 10 games. The Utes started the second half with some momentum thanks to a 7-0 run to take the lead.
Utah had three Utes score in double figures and was led by senior Lani White’s 17 points. Reese Ross contributed 11 points while Chyra Evans added 10. Sneed added nine points for Utah, with all nine coming from beyond the arc.
Ross led the Utes in rebounding with nine boards. Meanwhile, Evans and Brooke Walker each added six boards. LA Sneed and Walker each had four assists to help out Utah’s offensive efforts.
The Utes will stay on the road to face Kansas State on Saturday.
