After a successful two games at the Salt Lake City portion of NBA Summer League, No. 2 overall draft pick Darryn Peterson and the Utah Jazz traveled south to Las Vegas to continue the action.
The NBA made sure Peterson and the Jazz would face the Washington Wizards on Thursday night, a TV special for the first night of Vegas Summer League that pitted the former Kansas guard against the former BYU forward and No. 1 draft pick AJ Dybantsa.
Both had their moments, but Dybantsa’s big first quarter helped Washington to a 54-37 halftime lead and the Wizards held off a Utah comeback for a 92-88 win at a sold-out Thomas & Mack Center.
Dybantsa totaled 11 points in the early going, including a contested dunk going down the lane, to get the Wizards going. Dybantsa finished with 27 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals in 26 1/2 minutes. He shot 7 of 18 (38.9%) overall and 7 of 8 at the foul line.
“I turned the corner and saw a lane, and the only way I was getting that bucket was dunking because I had been fouled, like, two times, so the only way to finish was punching it,” Dybantsa told NBA.com.

Peterson finished with 24 points, three rebounds and three assists but committed eight turnovers in 30 minutes. Efficiency was Peterson’s hallmark in Salt Lake, shooting 19 of 36 (52.7%) in two games, but Thursday he shot just 6 of 18 (33.3%).
Cody Williams helped Utah rally in the second half, finishing with 16 points, five rebounds and four assists. Peterson made two free throws and hit a 7-foot floater to twice get the Jazz within one, the latter making it 86-85 with 1 minute left.
But second-year forward Will Riley, last year’s No. 25 overall pick, scored Washington’s final six points (two drives and two free throws) to seal it for the Wizards.
Utah next plays on Sunday, an 8 p.m. MDT tipoff against the Los Angeles Clippers that will stream on Amazon Prime Video. The Jazz play again at 7 p.m. Monday in an ESPN matchup with Chicago.
Utah’s final pool-play game comes Wednesday, July 15, with a 7:30 p.m. game against San Antonio on Prime Video.
After that, the top four teams play in the Summer League semifinals on July 18 and the winners advance to the championship game on July 19. The remaining 26 teams are paired for one consolation game to be played between July 17-19.
