BYU forward AJ Dybantsa (3) rises to dunk against Eastern Washington guard Isaiah Moses (2) on Monday, Dec. 22, 2025, in Provo.

The state of Utah’s two dancing men’s basketball teams learned their NCAA Tournament destinations Sunday evening during the tournament selection show.

Injured but competitive BYU (23-11) and star AJ Dybantsa landed a 6-seed and will play Thursday in Portland. The Cougars get the winner of the 11-seed play-in game between Texas and NC State, held Tuesday in Dayton, Ohio.

A win advances BYU to the second round against 3-seed Gonzaga or 14-seed Kennesaw State.

Utah State (28-6) found itself a No. 9 seed to face No. 8 Villanova on Friday in San Diego. That winner likely gets No. 1 Arizona in the second round.

Utah Valley, a 25-win team, fell short of the program’s first-ever NCAA Tournament bid in what seemed like a cruel ending late Saturday night in Las Vegas.

UVU led by seven points with less than 3 minutes left when Cal Baptist, also vying for its first dance card, found magic from its star scorer. Dominique Daniels, who was 3 of his first 21 field goal attempts on the night, made three 3-pointers in the final 3 minutes.

That put CBU up two late and UVU’s attempt to tie ended when an Isaac Davis dunk attempt rimmed out in the final seconds, sending the Lancers dancing in what is likely the last-ever WAC tournament. Cal Baptist landed a No. 13 seed to face No. 4 Kansas.

Elsewhere, Big West champion Hawaii, which has four Utah natives on its roster, is a 13-seed facing 4-seed Arkansas on Thursday in Portland.

Big Sky champion Idaho, who won the Big Sky tournament as a 7-seed, is a 15-seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Vandals will face No. 2 Houston on Thursday in Oklahoma City.

Miami (Ohio), with a 31-1 record, did make the field in an 11-seed Dayton play-in game.

Starting at $4.32/week.
