Utah State head coach Jerrod Calhoun gestures during an NCAA Tournament second-round game against Arizona on Sunday, March 22, 2026, in San Diego.Utah State’s knack for hiring great men’s basketball coaches will be tested again with a fifth different head coach in seven seasons come the 2026-27 campaign.
Two-year head coach Jerrod Calhoun is off to his alma mater of Cincinnati, which has been anticipated as soon as the Bearcats fired Wes Miller, according to reports from ESPN and CBS Sports.
Calhoun was 55-15 in two seasons at USU, including a 30-10 mark in the Mountain West. The Aggies won the MWC regular-season and tournament titles this season and defeated Villanova 86-76 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament before losing 78-66 to No. 1 seed Arizona on Sunday.
Calhoun is an Ohio native and graduated from Cincinnati in 2004. He was head coach at Youngstown State for seven years before arriving in Logan.
ESPN reports Calhoun will owe USU $3.9 million in an exit fee. Calhoun, 44, will sign a six-year contract with Cincinnati, CBS reports.
The move continues Utah State’s series of hiring sitting Division I head coaches who thrive in Logan and quickly move on.
In 2018, USU hired Craig Smith after four seasons at South Dakota. He lasted three years at USU, qualifying for the NCAA Tournament all three seasons, before leaving to be head coach at Utah.
In 2022, the Aggies hired five-year UMBC head coach Ryan Odom; he lasted two years before heading back east to VCU (he’s now at Virginia).
USU then turned to four-year Montana State head man Danny Sprinkle, who coached just one year (2024) with the Aggies before being hired at Washington. Utah State then looked to Calhoun in 2025.
In the eight seasons since Smith’s hire in 2018, USU has qualified for the NCAA Tournament seven times.
Utah State’s 29 wins this season were the most since the Aggies went 30-4 in the 2010-11 season.
