Weber State quarterback Bronson Barron throws a pass against North Dakota in an FCS first-round playoff game Saturday, Nov. 26, 2022, at Stewart Stadium in Ogden.

While Weber State continues the process to hire a head football coach to follow Jay Hill, current assistants and Hill’s eventual replacement will have a new signal-caller to run the offense in 2023.

Bronson Barron, a third-year sophomore and Weber State’s incumbent starting quarterback, has entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal. The news was first reported Tuesday by Mike Farrell’s “Farrell Portal” site and was confirmed that evening by the Standard-Examiner.

Barron posted to social media about his transfer mid-day Wednesday, expressing thanks to teammates and coaches for memories and relationships.

Barron threw for 5,146 yards (198 per game) and 36 touchdowns, with 14 interceptions, over 26 games in his WSU career.

After battling through injuries in the spring and fall 2021 seasons, missing five total games, the American Fork native started all 13 games in 2022 and kept on his career averages for yards and completion percentage while totaling 21 touchdowns and seven interceptions, finding more success in explosive pass plays early in the season.

Four-year junior quarterback Kylan Weisser is also transferring, he posted on social media one week ago. Weisser played in four games in the fall 2021 season with Barron hurt before breaking his leg in a win at Cal Poly.

Weisser, an Arizona native, finished his WSU career in a second-round playoff game at Montana State 10 days ago, taking over for Barron who was knocked out with concussion-like symptoms. Weisser threw 9 of 13 for 111 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in the second half.

Other quarterbacks who were on the roster in 2022 were sophomore Creyton Cooper, who has mostly been used in run-first packages, junior college transfer Brian Harper, who did not appear in any games in 2022, and freshman walk-on Jakob Hollingshaus.

Weber State currently has three, three-star quarterbacks signed or committed to the program.

Tiger Adolpho, currently on a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, signed with Weber State in the December 2021 early signing period for the 2022 class. He was the Idaho player of the year in 2021, went 22-2 as a starter and led Rigby High School to the 5A state title in 2021. He had offers from Kansas and Hawaii.

Richie Munoz is verbally committed to Weber State out of Charter Oaks High School in Covina, California. Charter Oak was 10-1 in the 2022 season with Munoz totaling 40 touchdowns and three interceptions, averaging 272 yards per game. He had interest from several Mountain West schools.

Dylan Gutierrez is another three-star quarterback verbally committed to WSU out of La Verne, California, and has offers from North Texas and Georgia Southern.

The early signing period for 2022 is Dec. 21-23.
