Weber State softball wins 12th straight by beating Texas A&M

By Brett Hein - | Mar 4, 2022

Arissa Henderson pitched a one-hit gem and Weber State softball extended its program-record win streak to 12 games with a 2-1 win over Texas A&M on Friday afternoon at the Judi Garman Classic hosted by Cal State Fullerton, before No. 6 UCLA ended the streak with a 9-1 decision Friday night.

Henderson held Texas A&M scoreless through five innings before a walk, a stolen base, a fielder’s choice and a groundout pushed across a run. But she maintained the 2-1 lead by getting a groundout to end the sixth inning with the tying run on third base.

Then, she struck out the final two batters to end the win in the seventh. Henderson struck out seven and walked three in the complete game, moving her season record to 4-0.

Faith Hoe doubled in Mia Rushton in the first inning to give Henderson a lead to pitch with. Rushton gave WSU one of its three hits with a single to score Gianna Memoli in the fifth for a 2-0 lead.

The 12-game streak ended against UCLA, one of the nation’s elite teams, in six innings in the nightcap. The Bruins scored four runs in each of the second and sixth innings to trigger the run rule. Chloe Camarero hit 2 for 3 and WSU got a run across in the sixth on an error.

At 14-3, Weber State finishes the tournament with games against Seattle and Penn on Saturday, and plays host Cal State Fullerton on Sunday.

WBB: SUU 75, WSU 65

Weber State women’s basketball got behind 20-10 after the first quarter, and that was the difference as it dropped its regular-season finale at Southern Utah to finish 10-19 overall and 6-14 in Big Sky play.

Daryn Hickok totaled 18 points, six rebounds and four steals in the loss. The Wildcats shot 17 of 57 (29.8%) from the field.

Weber State enters next week’s Big Sky tournament as the No. 10 seed. The No. 7 seed, WSU’s opponent, had yet to be determined at press time Friday night. The Wildcats will play their first-round game at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Boise’s Idaho Central Arena in a game streamed on ESPN+.

Idaho State clinched the No. 1 seed Friday night, with Montana State and SUU also grabbing first-round byes.

Starting at $4.32/week.
