Weber State softball final series rained out; schedule, bracket for Big Sky tournament set

By Brett Hein - Standard-Examiner | May 7, 2022

With its regular-season conference championship already secured last week, Weber State softball’s climb to the most single-season wins for the program hit a snag this weekend. The Wildcats’ entire three-game, season-finale series at Portland State was canceled due to rain and unplayable field conditions.

WSU and Portland State had two games nixed Friday and rescheduled to a doubleheader Saturday, but that too was washed out.

Weber State finishes the regular season with a 35-10 record and went 13-1 in Big Sky Conference play. WSU’s mark for most wins in a season is 38, though, either way, this team is locked into the best winning percentage in the program’s history since the relaunch of sanctioned softball.

WSU is 42-6 in regular-season Big Sky games over the last three seasons and has won the regular-season title six consecutive times, including five outright championships.

It marks the third straight Big Sky softball season where Weber State finished five losses better than the team in second place — 13-1 to Sacramento State’s 12-6 this season, 15-3 to Southern Utah’s 10-8 in 2021, and 14-2 to Idaho State’s 10-7 in 2019.

WSU had four games lost to rain this season: one home contest against Montana, and this weekend’s three road games at PSU.

No. 1 Weber State now prepares to host the Big Sky Conference tournament in the coming week at Wildcat Softball Field in Ogden. WSU and Sacramento State receive first-round byes by virtue of their top-two finishes. The six-team tournament excludes the last-place finisher, Southern Utah, which was 0-18 in Big Sky play and 3-40 overall.

The double-elimination tournament begins Wednesday, May 11, and concludes at noon Saturday, May 14, with the championship game (or games).

Below is the schedule for Wednesday’s opening-round games.

9:30 am. — No. 4 Northern Colorado vs. No. 5 Idaho State

Noon — No. 3 Portland State vs. No. 6 Montana

2:30 p.m. — No. 1 Weber State vs. NoCo/ISU winner

5 p.m. — No. 2 Sacramento State vs. PSU/UM winner
