Weber State track: Warnick misses nationals by 3 seconds; WSU season over

By Brett Hein - Standard-Examiner | May 27, 2022

Weber State’s track and field team sent 11 athletes to Fayetteville, Arkansas, for the NCAA West Regional meet held May 25-28.

Tracen Warnick was the closest to advancing to the national championship meet but painfully missed doing so by 3 seconds. Warnick finished 14th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase race with a time of 8 minutes, 43.43 seconds. The top 12 runners qualified to advance.

Alas, none of the 11 qualified for the national meet, ending WSU’s 2021-22 athletic season.

Warnick was among four men in the steeplechase competition. Jamison Wilkes finished 26th with a time of 8:57.51, Bronson Winter 34th at 9:02.67 and true freshman Peter Visser 37th at 9:04.08.

Christian Allen finished 21st in the men’s 10,000 meters on Wednesday, running a time of 29:17.91. Teammate Dallin Leatham was 41st at 30:18.13. Allen started but did not finish the 5,000-meter race Friday night.

Cody Canard threw the javelin 208 feet, 4 inches, for 22nd place. Teammate Josh Trafny was 43rd at 189 feet, 2 inches.

Pole vaulter Lachlan Burns jumped 17 feet, 0 1/4 inches for 24th place.

On the women’s side, Emily Barnes-Sterzer ran the 400-meter hurdles in 59.61 seconds, good for 33rd place. Cheyenne Leatham qualified for the 1,500 meters but did not start.

Weber State’s 2022-23 athletic season begins Aug. 18 when the women’s soccer team travels to Colorado to open its season. WSU volleyball is slated to begin competition in late August, and football opens at home on Sept. 1 against Western Oregon.
