Weber State women’s basketball wins 2 of 3 at Providence tournament

Weber State women’s basketball got big individual performances from different players on the way to two wins at its three-game tournament Friday through Sunday hosted by Providence College (Rhode Island).

WSU (3-3) returns home for a weekend homestand against Utah State (6 p.m. Thursday) and Seattle (1 p.m. Saturday) at the Dee Events Center.

WEBER STATE 57, BRYANT 50

Weber State held Bryant to four first-quarter points and held off the Bulldogs the rest of the way to open the event with a win Friday.

Forward Jadyn Matthews totaled 14 points, 16 rebounds, two assists and three blocks in the WSU victory. Daryn Hickok led the Wildcats with 19 points, shooting 9 of 10 from the foul line.

Center Vicky Parra added four points, nine rebounds and three assists. Guard Kaiija Lesane scored six points in 11 minutes.

PROVIDENCE 62, WEBER STATE 55

The Wildcats led their hosts from the Big East Conference 18-13 after the first quarter Saturday afternoon, but Providence took control by winning the second quarter 20-9.

Senior wing Laura Taylor scored a career-high 18 points, knocking down 4 of 9 from behind the arc. She made all of her team’s 3-pointers, with the rest of the squad going 0 of 9. Taylor added four rebounds.

Daryn Hickok totaled 13 points, 11 rebounds and five steals. Jadyn Matthews and Kaiija Lesane each added 10 points (a career-high for Lesane) and Vicky Parra pulled down eight rebounds.

WEBER STATE 71, HARTFORD 44

WSU led a struggling Hartford squad 18-6 after the first quarter and cemented a win by taking the third quarter 25-9.

Daryn Hickok racked up 21 points, nine rebounds, four assists and two blocks to lead Weber State. Jadyn Matthews scored 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Vicky Parra totaled four points, 15 rebounds, three assists and three blocks.

Sophomore reserve guard Taylin Smith, a transfer from UNLV, not only scored her first points as a Wildcat but totaled a career-high nine points, shooting 2 of 3 from behind the arc.

Hartford is in its final year of Division I competition and is moving to Division III next season.
