Running back Steven Shoats-Thomas drills on the first day of Weber State football fall camp Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2023, in Ogden.

Weber State football’s final scrimmage of fall camp will be under the lights and open to the public.

The Wildcats are set to scrimmage at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, at Bonneville High School. Admission is free.

After the scrimmage, which is expected to be at about 8:45 p.m., players will sign autographs for interested fans.

After that, WSU finishes camp with a few more practice sessions before game-week preparations begin ahead of the season opener Thursday, Aug. 31, against Central Washington.

Construction continues at Weber State’s Stewart Stadium, sending the scrimmage to Bonneville High. WSU’s new artificial turf field is installed but finish work continues for the field, track and the east side of the stadium.

The east side bleachers will not be available for use during the Aug. 31 opener but all work will be complete before the next home game, which is Sept. 23 against Montana State.

HOME GAME PROMOTIONS SET

WSU football announced the promotions that will go along with the team’s five home games this season.

They are: Aug. 31 whiteout (vs. Central Washington), Sept. 23 Throwback ‘Go W’ (vs. Montana State), Oct. 7 blackout (vs. Northern Arizona), Oct. 14 homecoming (vs. UC Davis), and Nov. 11 senior day/military appreciation (vs. Idaho).

VOLLEYBALL PICKED SECOND

Weber State volleyball was voted second by the league’s coaches in the Big Sky Conference preseason poll released Thursday.

Defending regular-season and tournament champion Northern Colorado was voted first in overwhelming fashion, though WSU did receive one first-place vote. The Bears will host this year’s conference tournament due to their 2022 regular-season title.

Weber State went 17-12 overall and 11-5 in league play last season.

WSU plays an exhibition at Air Force on Saturday before opening the season with its own Wildcat Invitational on Aug. 25-26 at Swenson Gym. WSU plays Utah Tech and Manhattan on Aug. 25, then Saint Mary’s on Aug. 26.

Below is the poll, with first-place votes in parentheses and total poll points listed after each school.
