Weber State forward Dillon Jones dribbles up court against Wright State in the Vegas 4 event Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2022, in Henderson, Nev.

Dillon Jones’ scalding start to Weber State’s conference schedule earned him not only top honors in the Big Sky but across the country as well.

The third-year forward’s stat-stuffing performances in wins over Northern Colorado and Northern Arizona resulted in Jones being named the mid-major player of the week for men’s basketball nationally.

That designation is given by CollegeInsider.com, which manages the Lou Henson Award watchlist and voting. Along with bestowing a season-end award for best mid-major player of the year, College Insider awards weekly Lou Henson honors throughout the season.

Jones averaged 17.5 points, 14 rebounds, 6.5 assists and two steals in the two wins. He totaled 26 points and 13 rebounds to top Northern Colorado, then grabbed 10 rebounds in the first half against Northern Arizona who denied him the ball as best they could before Jones finished with nine points, 15 rebounds and seven assists. He shot 17 of 18 from the free-throw line during the two games.

Jones also won the Big Sky’s player of the week honors for the second time this season and fifth time in his career. He won this season’s first weekly honors after averaging 16.3 points, 11 rebounds and 5.3 assists over the first three games.

WEISSER RETURNS AS QB

Weber State football will have more experience than anticipated at quarterback entering the 2023 season.

Junior quarterback Kylan Weisser announced Tuesday on Twitter that he had withdrawn his name from the transfer portal and will remain at Weber State.

Weisser was the first of a small handful of players (Bronson Barron, Eddie Heckard, Nuu Sellesin) to put his name in the portal. His decision came before Jay Hill left as head coach and before Barron, who is headed to Western Kentucky, decided to transfer.

Weisser has two seasons left to play and has been with the program since 2018.

aHe’s completed 62 of 102 career passes for 711 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions. Most of his experience came in 2021 with Barron injured, playing the second half against James Madison before starting contests against UC Davis and Cal Poly before breaking his leg against CP, resulting in him regaining that year of eligibility on a medical hardship waiver.

Weisser played sparingly in 2022 before Barron was injured in the playoff finale at Montana State. He threw 9 of 13 for 111 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in a second-half comeback attempt.

Other quarterbacks on WSU’s roster in 2022 were Creyton Cooper and Brian Harper. Three-star freshman Richie Munoz signed in the early signing period, three-star Dylan Gutierrez is also committed, and Weber State has offered Northern Arizona transfer RJ Martinez.

VOLLEYBALL ADDS OUTSIDE HITTER

Weber State volleyball will add another outside hitter ahead of the 2023 season in Mia Peterson.

Peterson, a 5-foot-11 transfer from New Mexico State with three seasons left to play, announced her commitment to Weber State via Instagram on Tuesday.

Peterson is an alum of Pleasant Grove High School and was a two-time, first-team All-State player in Utah. She totaled a team-high 369 kills in the fall of 2020, was named an honorable mention All-American, and redshirted at NMSU in 2021. In 2022, she totaled 67 kills and 76 digs in 52 sets played for the Aggies.

Starting at $4.32/week.
