Green Bay running back Ellis Merriweather (38) is tackled by Cleveland linebacker Winston Reid (59) during a preseason NFL game Saturday, Aug. 10, 2024, in Cleveland.

Winston Reid’s effort to become the next NFL player from Weber State took its first step Saturday when he suited up with the Cleveland Browns for the first time in the preseason.

Reid recorded six tackles, including one for loss, in Cleveland’s 23-10 home loss to the Green Bay Packers.

Reid’s tackle for loss was pieced together on two shared TFLs. The linebacker helped Chris Williams bring down Green Bay receiver Ellis Merriweather on a 5-yard loss, and helped Caleb Johnson stop rusher Emanuel Wilson for a loss of 1.

The Browns next play Saturday, hosting the Minnesota Vikings. Teams must trim preseason rosters to 53 players for the regular season by Aug. 27.

MEN’S, WOMEN’S BASKETBALL ADD GAMES

Weber State men’s basketball has added a few more nonconference games, including the home opener and another Division I opponent.

WSU will host UC Irvine on Nov. 22 or 23. Game contracts show the Wildcats will return the trip and play the Anteaters in California next season. WSU is 2-0 all-time against the Big West school, winning games in 2011 and 2012.

The Wildcats have also inked Northwest Indian College, a non-NCAA team, for the season opener on Monday, Nov. 4.

Known home games for Weber State are UC Irvine, Utah Valley, Northwest Indian College, and one game in the Big Sky-Summit Challenge. Road games are Oregon, Oregon State, Nevada, Utah Tech and the other Summit game.

Utah Tech will return the trip to Ogden in 2025. The three other road games combine to pay WSU $255,000 for one-off trips.

The WSU men still have 3-4 games left to finalize.

Both the WSU men and women await their matchups in the Big Sky-Summit Challenge; for the 2023-24 season, those were announced in May 2023. This season’s challenge games are scheduled for Dec. 4 and 7, with teams each playing once at home and once on the road.

The women’s team will also play Utah Valley at home, scheduled for Dec. 20, as part of a home-and-home that takes the Wildcats to Orem in 2025.

Jenteal Jackson’s crew also has a Nov. 7 game at Utah ($30K) and a Nov. 24 trip to Boise State ($28K).

The Boise State game is a one-time matchup; WSU’s contract with Utah also takes the Wildcats to Salt Lake City again in 2025.

The WSU women have about seven games left to finalize.

WOMEN’S SOCCER WINS EXHIBITION

Weber State’s women’s soccer team opened the school’s 2024-25 athletic calendar with a 5-1 exhibition victory Friday over Salt Lake Community College.

Brynlee Meyerhoffer (Fremont High) and Samantha Kearns (Farmington) netted in the sixth and eighth minutes to get the Wildcats going. Ali Swensen added one for a 3-0 halftime lead, and Sammi Sofonia and Grace Kirby-Hortin (Fremont) scored in the second half. Josie DeLine and Ella Sanders (Northridge) tallied one assist apiece.

Senior keeper Hadley Harris started in goal and played 69 minutes, surrendering a goal in the 40th minute, and freshman Annika Franz played keeper for the final 21 minutes. Franz is a freshman and Utah native who redshirted the 2023 season at the University of North Dakota.

Weber State opens the regular season hosting Utah Tech on Thursday before playing five straight matches on the road. The Wildcats also host Pacific (Sept. 5), Utah State (Sept. 15) and Wyoming (Sept. 22) at home before Big Sky play opens Sept. 26 with a home game against Northern Colorado.
