Weber State soccer opens season in 1-1 draw with Utah Tech
Weber State women’s soccer appeared ready to match last season’s win total right from the start until a corner-kick disparity became too much to hold off.
In the end, the Wildcats played to a 1-1 draw with Utah Tech on Thursday night at Wildcat Soccer Field in the first regular-season game in the 2024-25 school year for any sport.
The Wildcats lit the scoreboard first. Ali Swensen raced with a ball from Sayler Schlosser and boomed a 25-yard one-timer over Utah Tech keeper Brianna Frey in the 18th minute.
Weber State took 14 shots and put seven on frame. Frey was otherwise great for the Trailblazers, saving five WSU shots in the second half alone.
Utah Tech had only one shot on goal, and it was enough. On UTU’s fifth corner kick of the match, Adele Faller put the ball right where the Trailblazers needed in the 67th minute and Bre Koscielski headed a grounder past WSU keeper Hadley Harris for the equalizer.
In a new rule in college soccer, the contest ended after 90 minutes without extra time.
As a school, Utah Tech was playing its first official contest in any sport as a full-fledged Division I program (now eligible for postseason contests) after the Trailblazers’ probationary transition period came to an end this summer.
Weber State next plays five straight road matches beginning with a Sunday afternoon matchup at San Diego State.
