On Swensen goal, Weber State soccer earns draw at San Diego State

Weber State women’s soccer earned a draw for the second straight time to open the 2024 season, playing to a 1-1 score Sunday at San Diego State.

The Wildcats and Aztecs played to a scoreless first half with little action near either goal, though Weber State took the only two shots on frame in the first 45 minutes.

The second 45 minutes were much different. San Diego State peppered 15 shots with five on goal and, while Hadley Harris saved four of them, the Aztecs broke through in the 59th minute on a score by Grace Goins.

Weber State took less than 10 minutes to respond. In the 67th minute, junior Sayler Schlosser corralled a takeaway near midfield. Schlosser touched a pass ahead to a racing Ali Swensen and, near the top of the box, Swensen went to her right foot and punched the ball past the diving keeper, tucked inside the right post for a goal.

Both teams just missed potential game-winning attempts in the final 10 minutes.

In the 84th minute, SDSU’s Denise Castro had a one-on-one with Harris and after a touch to her right, fired from about 15 yards as Harris dove to block it. Harris made contact with Castro, who tumbled, but no foul was whistled despite SDSU protests; it appeared the contact was made after the shot was away, which went just right of frame.

Swensen had WSU’s final take in the 89th minute, streaking up the right side and firing a hard-angle shot that got past the keeper but flew just to the left of the far post.
