Coach Amicone is calling it a career.

Longtime, legendary Weber State softball head coach Mary Kay Amicone has announced that she will retire after the 2024 Wildcat softball season.

In her long and storied career, coach Amicone has won nearly 800 games as head coach at Weber State, Salt Lake Community College and BYU.

“I’ve been so fortunate to be a coach and a teacher for so long and as a coach, it’s been my mission to give back to our families and our players on and off the field, to make their lives excellent, and leave them in a better place,” Amicone said. “For me, it feels like I’ve set the path in a good direction and I’m ready to pass the torch.”

Amicone is also a former Weber State player and has been the head coach at Weber State since 2014. In her 10 years with the Wildcats, she has led Weber State to 275 wins and is the Big Sky Conference’s all-time leader in wins and winning percentage. She has won 109 conference regular season games, the most in Big Sky history.

She has guided the Wildcats to six Big Sky regular season titles and four Big Sky Tournament championships. The Wildcats have advanced to the NCAA Championships four times and in 2019, became the first school in Big Sky history to win a game at the NCAA Regionals.

She has been named the Big Sky Coach of the Year four times and also coached three Big Sky Conference Players of the Year.

Before coming to Weber State in 2014, she spent nine seasons as the head coach at Salt Lake Community College where she led the Bruins to seven conference titles and advanced to three National Junior College Championship games. She was named the conference Coach of the Year four times. She won 433 games in her time at SLCC.

Amicone was also the first varsity head coach at BYU where she coached from 2000-2002, and led the Cougars to the 2001 Mountain West Championship and was named Coach of the Year. She also spent seven seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Utah and was the head baseball coach at Jordan High School, the first female to coach at Utah high school boys baseball team.

She played two seasons at Weber State from 1980-81, then two more seasons at Utah.

“I started my college playing career here at Weber State and it’s been a real honor to end my career here,” Amicone said. “I’ve been influenced by so many athletes and coaches who have supported my dreams here and I have treasured the opportunity to be here.”

She is married to Marc Amicone, who is the President and General Manager of the Salt Lake Bees. They are the parents of Trevor and Derek, and are expecting their first grandbaby in June.

“Coach Amicone has been a coaching legend throughout her career and has impacted the lives of countless student-athletes,” WSU Director of Athletics Tim Crompton said. “She has left her mark on our institution and athletic department specifically. She will certainly be missed and we wish her all the best in her retirement.”
