Second-half goals, late save give Weber State soccer consecutive wins

Wildcats top Cal State Bakersfield 2-1 in home opener

By BRETT HEIN - Standard-Examiner | Aug 21, 2025

Freshman goalkeeper Lauren Butorac got her first call to mind the net in the home opener for Weber State women’s soccer Thursday night, taking over to open the second half with the Wildcats trailing 1-0 to visiting Cal State Bakersfield.

Two WSU goals gave the Wildcats a chance to win and Butorac an opportunity to record a game-winning save. With a 2-1 lead in the 81st minute, the Wildcats misplayed a cross into the box and Bakersfield’s Catalina Roggerone put a spinning left-footer toward the net.

Butorack’s left-footed kick save cleared the ball out of harm’s way, and another Roadrunner put a shot into the side of the net for a Weber goal kick, leaving many on the visiting team with their hands on top of their heads.

Weber State brought the 2-1 victory home in the final 9 minutes and celebrated the program’s first pair of consecutive wins since a four-game winning streak late in the 2022 season.

Weber outshot Bakersfield 10-5 in shots on goal; Butorac made two saves and Annika Franz had two in the first half.

Daniela Osejo got one past Franz in the 12th minute to put the Roadrunners (0-3) in the lead until just after halftime.

Like WSU did in its win at Oregon State, the Wildcats had quick answers out of the break.

In the 50th minute, WSU’s Sayler Schlosser sent a ball near the 6-yard box where a sprinting Tenzi Knowles reached for a flick and found the net to equalize at 1-1.

Five minutes later, the Wildcats were handling a free kick sent from near midfield to the 18-yard box, where, after a few touches, Grace Kirby put a lefty liner from atop the box past Bakersfield keeper Kamy Anaya for the lead.

Weber State remains at home for an 11:30 a.m. Sunday matinee with North Dakota State (1-2).

Starting at $4.32/week.
