Utah, BYU players named to Big 12 preseason team

Utah had three players and BYU two who were voted to the Big 12’s preseason all-conference football team released this week.

Utah quarterback Devon Dampier was voted as preseason newcomer of the year. After 21 games at New Mexico, including 13 starts, Dampier transferred to Utah and followed offensive coordinator Jason Beck to Salt Lake City. Dampier led the Mountain West in total offense with 3,934 yards, including 2,768 passing yards, and was UNM’s first-ever QB to make first team all-conference.

Two offensive linemen got preseason first team nods as well in Spencer Fano and Caleb Lomu. Fano started all 12 games last season at right tackle and was named a first team All-Big 12 selection after the season. Lomu started all 12 games in 2024 at left tackle. Utah returns all five starting offensive linemen.

Davis High alum Will Ferrin was one of two BYU players named to the preseason team. Ferrin, entering his senior year, set new BYU records for field goals in a season (24) and tied the school record for consecutive made field goals (16) in 2024.

Chase Roberts is the other Cougar getting a preseason nod. The 6-foot-4 senior receiver led BYU with 52 catches for 854 yards and four touchdowns in 2024.

Arizona State sophomore quarterback Sam Leavitt was voted to Big 12 preseason offensive player of the year and Texas Tech senior linebacker Jacob Rodriguez as preseason defensive POY.

BYU opens the season Aug. 30, hosting Portland State, while Utah travels that day to UCLA.

Starting at $4.32/week.
