You might be old enough to remember a time when it wasn’t news if college basketball teams in Utah played each other; not long ago, the games were assumed and automatic.
But in 2025, it’s not, leaving sports fans to rejoice when they happen.
One more such game is now on the books. Weber State men’s basketball will travel to Utah State in the second week of the upcoming season, according to a contract obtained by the Standard-Examiner.
The two schools signed a deal last year to play a pair of exhibition games, with the first on Oct. 18, 2024, in Logan. But the exhibition return game to Ogden this fall is complicated by the ongoing installation of a new geothermal heating and cooling system at the Dee Events Center.
So instead, WSU will travel to Logan again, this time for a regular-season game, and get $85,000 from the Aggies for the pleasure. Weber State and Utah State last played a regular-season game in 2022, a 75-72 WSU victory. Weber has won two of its last three games in Logan.
That addition comes on the heels of the Wildcats lining up three future games with the University of Utah, breaking a run of 15 years since the Utes signed a direct contract to play WSU. Weber State will play at Utah on Saturday, Nov. 8, and go to Utah State on Wednesday, Nov. 12.
That means the Wildcats will play four of the other six Utah basketball teams this season. Utah Tech will play in Ogden to finish a home-and-home series and WSU also plays at Utah Valley in the third game of a four-year contract. Regular-season games with BYU or Southern Utah do not appear to be in the cards for 2025.
WSU also has its games in the Big Sky-Summit Challenge assigned (home to Oral Roberts, road at St. Thomas) and a return road game to UC Irvine on the 2025-26 slate.
