Weber State women’s basketball thinks they’ll have strong outside shooting this season but for now, the Wildcats will need another go at it to find out if that’s true.

WSU shot 4 of 27 from the 3-point line Tuesday night, rendering the Wildcats unable to make up ground after a first-quarter run by homestanding Colorado State that led the Rams to a 75-58 victory in the season opener for both teams.

Two Weber State players tallied career highs in the loss. Senior forward Antoniette Emma-Nnopu scored a career-high 22 points on 10-of-17 shooting while adding a team-high 11 rebounds. Junior point guard Sydney White, scoring seven points in her WSU debut, totaled a career-high seven assists.

Emma-Nnopu scored in the paint three times to get Weber State going offensively and a pair of Nicole Willardson free throws had the Wildcats up 10-8 midway through the first quarter. But Lexus Bargesser, an Indiana transfer, scored eight of her career-high 22 points in the first, helping key a 15-3 Colorado State run to finish the quarter.

That put the Rams up 23-13 and the Wildcats spent the rest of the night chasing that margin. White opened the second quarter with a 3-pointer but CSU ultimately led by double-digits for the final 26:15 of game time.

Senior guard Lanae Billy was WSU’s only other double-digit scorer, putting in 11 points. The third-best returning 3-point shooter in the nation, Billy made just 1 of 6 from distance as no Wildcat made more than one triple.

New Mexico transfer Paris Lauro added six rebounds and two blocks but scored zero points for WSU. White, Billy, Lauro, Emma-Nnopu and Hannah Robbins got the start for the Wildcats. Robbins, a New Mexico and Montana State transfer, scored five points and shot 0 of 5 from distance in her first career start.

Willardson added six points off the bench. Redshirt freshman Maya Davis, totaling four points and four rebounds, played somewhat of a backup point guard role to White.

Colorado State had four double-digit scorers and shot 30 of 58 from the field, with Marta Leimane adding 17 points to Bargesser’s 22.

WSU returns to Ogden for a home opener at 2 p.m. Saturday against Westminster.

Starting at $4.32/week.
