Weber State's Ashley Gneiting dives for a dig in a Big Sky tournament quarterfinal against Montana on Monday, Nov. 24, 2025, in Greeley, Colo.Weber State senior Jayda Tupea attempted to repeat a successful kill she had a few points earlier in the second set, slicing a hard angle across the net on a swing. Her ball landed long of the sideline and out for a Montana point.
That was the first hitting error Weber State recorded in the match after a string of 86 points without one.
That efficiency headlined the No. 4 Wildcats in a 25-18, 25-20, 25-20 sweep of No. 5 Montana to open the Big Sky Conference volleyball tournament Monday morning in Greeley, Colorado.
“Something that we haven’t had all season, which is a little bit of consistency and resilience through some adversity,” WSU head coach Jeremiah Larsen said on a postgame ESPN+ interview when asked to evaluate what made the difference for his team. “Montana came after us in Set 2 and 3, and we just stayed calm and composed.”
It was Weber State’s (18-11) second sweep of Montana in six days and advanced the Wildcats to the tournament semifinals at 4 p.m. Tuesday. WSU has won nine straight sets dating to the final matches of the regular season.
In a stunner, WSU will take on No. 8 Idaho State (12-17) after the Bengals upset No. 1 Northern Arizona (23-7) in five sets. WSU and ISU split their season series with a pair of four-set decisions.
Weber State hit .500 to mow over Montana in the first set. The Griz posted a final challenge in the third, going up 11-8, then pushing back a WSU rally to go up again 15-13.
But Weber sprinted from there, finishing the third set with a 12-5 advantage to move on in the tournament.
Ashley Gneiting and Kaylie Ray led the Wildcats with 11 kills; Gneiting had zero errors and hit .611 while adding 11 digs.
“She has a broken finger, for heaven’s sakes. Such a cool kid,” Larsen said. “I’ve been lucky to have her for four years.”
Rose Moore added 10 kills, four total blocks and two service aces. Brielle Rueckert had four total blocks. Morgan Pratt added 18 assists and Addison Eastwood 12, while Marly Pratt pitched in 11 digs.
