Utah hadn’t run away but had led comfortably by about 10 or so most of the night with Weber State women’s basketball at the Huntsman Center for a pre-Thanksgiving appetizer Wednesday night in Salt Lake City.

That changed when guard Avery Hjelmstad caught fire to start the fourth quarter, turning a 13-point lead into a 20-point advantage by scoring 10 of her 12 total points in the initial 1:34 of the fourth frame.

But with Utah up 56-36, Weber State didn’t wilt.

Sydney White keyed a torrid 14-0 run before the visitors ran out of gas and the Utes held on for a 65-52 victory.

Utah (4-3) got back in the win column after a beating at the hands of No. 1 UConn. The Utes previously beat Utah State by 37 and Utah Valley by 23.

Weber State (2-5) capped its string of four straight in-state foes which began with a home win over Utah Tech (82-76) before road losses at Utah Valley (59-55), BYU (79-62) and then Utah.

WSU cut the 20-point deficit to six quickly. Lanae Billy hit the final of her five 3-pointers to start things with 6:03 left before White swished three 3-pointers in 2:27 of game clock to make it 58-52 with 3:02 remaining.

In two possessions to cut it closer, WSU missed in the paint and threw away a perimeter turnover, the latter of which put Utah’s Brooke Walker in transition for a layup to finally quell the Weber rally.

The Wildcats missed their final four shots and Utah put the game away at the free-throw line.

Billy led WSU and all scorers with 19 points, adding five rebounds. White finished with 12 points on a 4-of-6 clip from the 3-point line. Hannah Robbins pitched in 11 points and four assists, and Antoniette Emma-Nnopu had four points, 10 rebounds and four assists.

Hjelmstad’s 12 points led Utah. Walker, Lani White, Chyra Evans and Maty Wilke each scored nine points.

Utah next welcomes Montana to Salt Lake on Saturday.

Weber State has one week off and next plays at South Dakota State (5-0) on Dec. 3 as part of the Big Sky-Summit Challenge. WSU hosts North Dakota State (3-2) on Saturday, Dec. 6.

Starting at $4.32/week.
