Weber State quarterback Jackson Gilkey gestures between plays in a game against Butler on Saturday, Sept. 20, 2025, at Stewart Stadium in Ogden.

The extent of quarterback Jackson Gilkey’s affliction and availability is now known following his injury Saturday at UC Davis.

Gilkey suffered a fractured left fibula late in the road loss; as expected, he’ll miss the rest of the 2025 season. The fibula is on the outside of the leg, which helps the tibia connect the knee to the ankle.

WSU head coach Mickey Mental said Gilkey had surgery Tuesday to repair the break, which came near his ankle. The QB suffered the injury when his left foot became caught in the turf and twisted on a feet-first slide with 6 minutes left in the contest.

Gilkey, from Ennis, Texas, is in his first season at Weber State. The redshirt sophomore spent two seasons at UTSA before transferring to WSU. Gilkey started all five games this season, passing for 693 yards and four touchdowns to nine interceptions. He also rushed for 227 yards, including 114 yards and a touchdown at McNeese.

The injury leaves Weber State (2-3) down to two available quarterbacks. Redshirt freshman Cash McCollum, a transfer from North Texas, has been positioned as the No. 2 QB this season but suffered broken bones in his right throwing hand during a practice and is out indefinitely.

That leaves junior Dijon Jennings and true freshman Kingston Tisdell as WSU byes this week (three practices, no game) before hosting Sacramento State on Oct. 11. Jennings is in his fourth college season and second at Weber State.

“We’re going to battle it out. Dijon has the upper hand right now but we’re just continuing to develop them and put a game plan together for Sac State,” Mental said. “(Jennings) is going to play; Kingston’s still up in the air.”

Elsewhere, Mental said starting offensive linemen Jacob Edmonds and Nelson Arapa, who left the game Saturday, should be ready to play against Sac State. Starting defensive end Keahnist Thompson suffered a foot injury and his evaluation is ongoing.

That, of course, is part of every football coach’s bye-week goals.

“Get healthy. And then just work on technique, getting better at our craft and putting three good practices back to back to back” Mental said.

Starting at $4.32/week.
