Rice guard Aaron Powell handles the basketball during a game in the 2024-25 season in Houston, Texas.

With at least nine players to add for next season, Kaleb Canales has the first commitment as Weber State’s head coach for men’s basketball.

Rice transfer guard Aaron Powell announced his commitment to Weber State on Sunday night via Instagram.

Powell’s post had no caption but drew notable reactions. Chris Paul commented, “Go crazy!!!” and former 20-year NBA veteran Jamal Crawford said, “Time to show up and show out!!”

Powell is a 6-foot-1 guard from Los Angeles who committed to Rice in the 2024 class. He scored 18.2 points per game as a senior at Campbell Hall High School and, at one point, was rated a four-star prospect by ESPN. 247 Sports lists Arizona State, Indiana, UT Arlington, Montana and others as his offers out of high school.

As a freshman, Powell played 6.4 minutes per game in a reserve role, scoring 2.4 points per game. He redshirted the 2025-26 season and has three years of eligibility remaining.

The Athletic editor Tobias Bass posted on X that Powell “will thrive in Kaleb Canales’ system.”

Weber State has nine outgoing players (with eligibility remaining) in the transfer portal after the dismissal of four-year head coach Eric Duft. Declan Cutler, ArDarius Grayson and Bourgeois Tshilobo are three Wildcats from 2025-26 not currently in the portal.

The transfer portal remains open for players to enter their names through April 21.

WSU WOMEN ADD MONTANA GUARD

Jenteal Jackson and the Weber State women added their first transfer addition when Montana guard Draya Wacker announced her commitment to WSU on Friday.

Wacker is a 5-foot-8 guard and Montana native. She spent four seasons with the Griz, sitting the first two with injury and a redshirt. As a sophomore, she averaged 4.9 points and 3.2 rebounds per game as a utility player off the bench, playing 18.8 minutes per game.

With incoming freshmen Berkley Hart and Izabella Juarez, WSU has about three more players to add. On3 reports four outgoing transfers for the Wildcats: junior wing Makenna Shaffer-Lauer, and freshmen guards Maya Davis, Fui Niumeitolu and Vanna Quintana.

Starting at $4.32/week.
