Weber State's Gavin Ortega (71) battles McNeese lineman Marques White (3) on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2024, at Stewart Stadium in Ogden.Offensive lineman Gavin Ortega was Weber State’s full representative in the NFL draft and post-draft signings this weekend as the four-year Wildcat is headed one state east.
Ortega signed as an undrafted free agent with the Denver Broncos, WSU said after the draft concluded Saturday.
The 6-foot-5 lineman earned All-American honors in 2025, wrapping up his career as a three-year starter.
Linebacker Jack Kelly became the 39th former Weber State player, and first since Taron Johnson in 2018, to be selected in the NFL draft. The New York Giants selected the Kearns native in the sixth round (193rd overall) on Saturday.
Kelly spent three years at Weber State. As a sophomore in 2023, Kelly was an All-Big Sky First Team selection, placing fourth nationally in FCS with 10.5 sacks and fifth nationally with four forced fumbles.
He transferred to BYU for his final two seasons. In 2025, Kelly was named an All-Big 12 First Team selection and recorded 55 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss and led BYU with 10 sacks.
Former running back teammates Damon Bankston and Dontae McMillan are other former Weber State players to line up free-agent opportunities. According to multiple reports, Bankston (who finished his career at New Mexico) signed with the Giants. McMillan (who finished at Eastern Michigan) signed as a free agent with the Baltimore Ravens.
Free-agent deals can vary but usually involve at least some smaller amount of guaranteed money to compete in the team’s offseason camp.
BYU got two on the board in the draft with tight end Carsen Ryan going in the seventh and final round, drafted 248th overall by the Cleveland Browns.
Utah had its third player go eight picks later when tight end Dallen Bentley heard his name called by the Broncos at 256th overall.
Two picks made history for the Utes on Thursday when the Browns took offensive lineman Spencer Fano with the No. 9 overall pick, and the New England Patriots selected offensive lineman Caleb Lomu with the 28th choice. The pair became Utah’s 11th and 12th all-time first-round selections and marked the first time the program had two first-round picks in the same draft.
