Weber State soccer: Butorac’s 7 saves help WSU to 0-0 draw at Utah

Weber State sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Butorac racked up seven saves and the Wildcats survived Utah’s attack to earn a 0-0 draw to open the women’s soccer season Wednesday night in Salt Lake City.
Among those seven saves (in 17 total shots), Butorac saved a header from Utah forward and Ogden High alum Nevaeh Peregrina and knocked away an Abby Affleck shot near the crossbar in the first 13 minutes.
Butorac saved two shots in the 53rd minute alone and a Rylan Park header hit the crossbar in the 70th minute.
WSU nearly took the lead in the 21st minute when Oakley Anderson got one-on-one with Utah keeper Anna Solomon, who deflected Anderson’s attempt safely over the goal.
Solomon also saved a free kick from WSU’s Lily Blum in the 60th minute that went low.

Weber State, picked to win the Big Sky Conference this year, makes its home debut at 6 p.m. Sunday. The Wildcats welcome Boise State to Ogden; the Broncos are 1-0 this year after defeating CSUN 3-0 on Wednesday.
BYU claims upset road win
BYU women’s soccer opened the season with a bang, claiming a 2-1 road win at No. 9 UCLA on Wednesday night.
It was BYU’s first win at UCLA since 1998 and snaps the Bruins’ 10-game winning streak in season openers.
Mattyn Summers-Oviatt scored BYU’s first goal of the match, while true freshman Brynnli Tolbert scored the game-winning goal in her first collegiate game.
The Cougars, sitting just outside the preseason top 25, start the season with a good case to enter the rankings. BYU next plays Aug. 19 in a road trip to Wisconsin.
