Weber State football: Leadership council to guide Wildcats in 2026

(Robert Casey, Weber State Athletics)It may not be a foreign concept to at least some followers of college football in the state of Utah, but one change under Eric Kjar’s control of the Weber State program is the implementation of a leadership council to help guide the Wildcats.
WSU will still have captains, which Kjar said will serve mostly as on-field leaders. Some from the leadership council may also end up as captains, but the council looks at a larger scope.
The council meets regularly and also participates in service.
“We ask them questions about what direction they want to go or what things they want to improve with what we’re doing in our program,” Kjar said. “Leadership council is all-encompassing to the whole football program.”
Associate head coach and linebackers coach Tanner Jacobson is the staffer who heads the leadership council.
“He does a phenomenal job of giving them leadership roles and responsibilities across the board,” Kjar said. “So we spread out our leadership roles that way … try to distribute it more throughout the team and give them more training.”
The eight players on the leadership council were voted to it by teammates. One council helped lead the program through spring and summer, and then a revote put a new council in place for the 2026 season, beginning with fall camp.
