Weber State women’s basketball ended a nine-game losing streak Monday night in Ogden, breaking out of a shooting slump in every phase and, after blowing a huge lead, putting Sacramento State away down the stretch for a 72-64 win at the Dee Events Center.

Weber State (7-16, 1-9 Big Sky) led 19-8 after one quarter thanks, in part, to forcing Sac State into nine first-quarter turnovers.

Leading 38-30 at halftime, WSU extended that to 53-37 on four straight Nicole Willardson points to lead by 16 with 2:54 left in the third quarter.

Sacramento State (11-12, 5-5) turned off the hose and had the Wildcats in trouble, though, going on a 20-4 run and tying the game 57-57 with 4:58 left on a Natalie Picton 3 and a Jaety Mandaquit layup.

But the Hornets never took the lead (there, or at any point in the game). The teams traded points until Lanae Billy broke the tie with a 3-pointer to go up 64-61. Willardson followed with a post spin and a left-handed shot off the backboard that spun twice fully around the rim and fell through, putting WSU up 66-61 with 1:23 left.

Billy (4 of 4) and Antoniette Emma-Nnopu (2 of 2) iced the game at the free-throw line from there.

WSU shot 11 of 24 (45.8%) on two-pointers, 9 of 17 (52.9%) from the 3-point line, and 23 of 26 (88.5%) from the free-throw line.

Paris Lauro got hot from distance and led Weber State in first-half scoring, eventually finishing with 17 points on a 5-of-7 mark from distance. Emma-Nnopu totaled 19 points (12 of 14 from the line), eight rebounds and three blocks.

Hannah Robbins added 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting for Weber State, and Billy pitched in 12 points and six assists.

Picton led Sac State with 22 points and Rubi Gray scored 13.

WSU returns to the road to face Northern Colorado on Thursday and Northern Arizona on Saturday.

Starting at $4.32/week.
