Weber State football: 24 players set to enter transfer portal in 2026 window

College football's portal window is open Jan. 2-16

Weber State defensive lineman Matt Herron (97) signals a first down after rushing a fourth-down fake punt against Northern Colorado on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2024, at Stewart Stadium in Ogden.

The way transfers work changes each year. For this offseason, however, we’ve reached the transfer portal window for college football and Weber State is set to lose about 21 outgoing players who have eligibility remaining.

The portal windows dictate when players are allowed to enter their names into the NCAA’s transfer database and be contacted by other coaches. (This does not apply to graduate transfers or players on teams who have a head coaching change outside of the window.)

The NCAA has consolidated those opportunities into just one period for the offseason between the 2025 and 2026 seasons: Jan. 2-16. Players must enter their names into the transfer portal during this time to be eligible to play in the 2026 season. After submitting their names, players can commit to a new school at any time; that’s not restricted to the two-week window.

While the Standard-Examiner does not have access to the portal database, as Friday arrived, Weber State had 21 players who had announced their intention to enter the transfer portal on social media. Coaching changes likely impacted some, while others may have been ready to transfer anyway.

The list highlights the work Eric Kjar and company have in front of them to build a roster for the 2025 season.
