Weber State women’s basketball’s four-game win streak came crashing to a halt in the new year with two road losses to begin conference play.

Senior forward Antoniette Emma-Nnopu, WSU’s leading scorer and rebounder, did not play due to a concussion. WSU hopes she’ll be ready to play in the coming week when the Wildcats (6-9, 0-2 Big Sky) host Northern Arizona (6 p.m. Thursday) and Northern Colorado (2 p.m. Saturday) in the Dee Events Center.

PSU 68, WSU 58

Weber State’s league opener on Jan. 1 was decided in two simple stretches: the Wildcats started the game 0 of 9 from the field, falling behind 8-3, and ended the game on another 0-of-9 shooting stretch.

Makenna Shaffer-Lauer drove and spun in the paint for a tough make to give Weber State a 58-51 lead. But the Wildcats wouldn’t score in the final 6:20 of game time and Portland State (5-9, 1-1) won its first Big Sky opener in eight years by finishing the game on a 17-0 run.

WSU bounced back from the bad start, scoring 26 points in the second quarter and, between the droughts that bookended the game, shot 19 of 37 from the field.

Playing a seven-player rotation, Hannah Robbins led WSU with 18 points. Lanae Billy totaled 13 points and nine rebounds, and Shaffer-Lauer had 12 points and eight rebounds.

Kyleigh Brown led PSU with 18 points and Hannah Chicken netted 17 points. Cici Ellington pulled down 16 rebounds.

SAC 60, WSU 39

Weber State floundered to just 13 second-half points Saturday in a loss at Sacramento State.

WSU made just 14 field goals and committed 24 turnovers.

Benthe Versteeg totaled 18 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and six steals for Sac State (7-8, 1-1). Keanna Salave’a added 13 points and 13 rebounds.

Sydney White made six of WSU’s 14 baskets, totaling 15 points. Makenna Shaffer-Lauer had six points and seven rebounds.

Starting at $4.32/week.
