Morris, the former Weber State player, has been promoted to the Utah Jazz support staff, the Salt Lake City Stars posted on social media Thursday.

Morris told the Standard-Examiner that he’s been brought up to the parent club full time as an assistant video coordinator.

“I played Jr. Jazz and went to Jazz games growing up. This new opportunity means a lot to me as somebody that grew up watching the NBA and being from Utah getting to be part of the Jazz organization,” Morris said in a text message. “It’s surreal to be in the building now, and I am honored and don’t take it for granted.”

Morris is an alumnus of Ben Lomond High School. The 6-foot-7 wing player appeared in 25 games over four seasons at Weber State (2016-20) before getting involved in coaching.

Morris returned to WSU as director of player personnel in the 2023-24 season on Eric Duft’s staff before taking a job with the Stars, Utah’s G League affiliate. He’s worked as a coaching associate and a player development coach in his two years with the Stars.

“It’s been extremely rewarding for me to learn things at the highest level and learn from people that have been in the NBA for a long time,” Morris said. “My path there has come from a lot of connections I’ve built through basketball locally, and people I met through my time at Weber.”

CHECKING IN WITH WSU ALUMS

Dillon Jones (2020-24) averaged 8.2 pts, 4.4 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.8 steals in 22.6 minutes per game over five appearances for the New York Knicks during NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. The two-time title-ring winner totaled 18 points, six rebounds and four assists in a win over Detroit.

Jerrick Harding (2016-20), WSU’s all-time scoring king, said goodbye to Lithuania and has signed with Turk Telekom in Turkey. That team reached the EuroCup semifinals last season. He led Rytas to the Basketball Champions League title by averaging 22.5 points and 5.5 assists in the final four; Rytas is the first team from Lithuania to win the BCL. Harding has also played in Czechia, Andorra and Spain in his career, once leading Spain’s top professional league in scoring.

The 13-year pro career of Scott Bamforth (2010-13) continues this summer with his return to Fuerza Regia in Mexico. He was Finals MVP for the Monterrey-based club last summer. The well-traveled Bamforth played in Kosovo during the regular winter season.

After playing professionally in France, Iceland and the Dominican Republic over the last two years, former WSU shooting guard Steven Verplancken Jr. (2022-24) has been hired at the University of Louisville as a graduate assistant and player development coach. Louisville has finished ranked in each of head coach Pat Kelsey’s first two seasons and is again expected to be a Top 25 team, if not better, in the upcoming campaign.
