Weber State women’s basketball has added a coach with local ties to its bench while WSU’s new football and men’s basketball head coaches will meet the public Saturday on campus.

Here’s a few of the latest news bits from Weber State sports.

Meet Kjar, Canales on Saturday

Weber State announced an opportunity for local fans to meet new head coaches Eric Kjar (football) and Kaleb Canales (men’s basketball) this weekend on campus.

Kjar and Canales will introduce themselves Saturday, May 9, and “share insights on their teams and the upcoming seasons,” WSU says.

That event, free to attend, is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the fourth-floor reception area at Stewart Stadium. WSU does have an RSVP link on the announcement at WeberStateSports.com.

WBB hires Bear River alum Jones

Weber State women’s basketball announced the hiring of Felicity “Flip” Jones to its coaching staff on Wednesday. Jones is an alumnus of Bear River High School who returns to Utah after spending much of her post-high-school basketball journey in Idaho.

Jones joins Jenteal Jackson’s coaching staff after four seasons as an assistant at the College of Southern Idaho, a junior college in Twin Falls. She’s also spent time coaching high school and at a skills academy.

“I am thrilled to add Coach Flip to our coaching staff,” Jackson said in a news release. “She is a tremendous addition to our team, Weber State and the community. I am confident she will add knowledge, high level energy and connection to our group every single day. She comes from a championship program and will bring elite experience to elevate our program.”

Jones replaces Cydney McHenry, who has been on Jackson’s staff for all three seasons but was recently hired as an assistant coach at New Mexico.

Jones is a 2009 graduate of Bear River High in Tremonton. The former standout for the Bears played two college seasons at CSI and finished her college career at NAIA College of Idaho.

Men add N. Colorado assistant Campbell

WSU men’s basketball announced the first hire of Kaleb Canales’ new tenure on Thursday. The Wildcats have added Dondrale Campbell as an assistant coach.

Campbell has been an assistant coach at Northern Colorado for the past three seasons. Before that, he was a boys basketball head coach for six seasons at Cleveland and Grant high schools in Portland, Oregon.

Campbell was also NoCo’s player development director and brings a decade of skills training to WSU, the school says. He was also an assistant coach at South Puget Sound Community College for two seasons before his stints as a high school head coach.

“I have known Dondrale for years and have always admired him as a person, coach, recruiter, and player development coach,” Canales said in a news release. “He will be instrumental in our recruiting process of high-level student-athletes that will help us win championships. Dondrale has worked with some of the brightest minds in basketball, and his passion for the game will help our players get better. He will fit right in with the rest of our staff as we hit the ground running.”

Campbell was a high school teammate of Damian Lillard and has worked as a coach at Lillard’s Formula Zero camp, which trains some of the top college and high school players each summer.

Volleyball adds new assistant coach

Weber State women’s volleyball announced the hiring of Brandon Watson as an assistant coach to Jeremiah Larsen’s staff on Wednesday.

Watson was previously a graduate assistant at the University of West Florida and a student assistant at Arkansas. He replaces WSU alum Kate Payne, who spent one season as third coach for the Wildcats.

“Brandon’s work ethic, volleyball eye, and passion for the teaching process made him a wonderful fit for our program,” Larsen said in a news release. “We are looking forward to having him in our gym and helping our team grow and develop.”

Larsen will enter his 12th season as head coach of the program in the coming school year. Sammi Stuart will be in her fifth season as assistant coach after joining Larsen’s staff in 2022, following her three years as head coach at Idaho State.

Starting at $4.32/week.
