Weber State notebook: Shorthanded volleyball rallies; soccer saves point at Idaho

By BRETT HEIN - Standard-Examiner | Oct 1, 2026

Weber State volleyball rallied without a top hitter on Thursday while WSU women’s soccer salvaged a point on the road to open Big Sky play.

WSU 3, PSU 1

Weber State volleyball lost the first set after leading 22-20, but rallied even without kills leader Rose Moore to beat Portland State 24-26, 25-15, 25-19, 25-22 on Thursday night at Swenson Gym.

The Wildcats answered the first-set loss by hitting .393 in the second set and .400 in the fourth set, ultimately outhitting the Vikings .273 to .138.

Weber (9-4, 2-1 Big Sky) served nine aces, including four from Marly Pratt.

Without Moore, Carlson led WSU with 15 kills, adding three aces and 11 digs to defeat PSU (5-9, 1-2).

Tennille Gonder swung 14 kills, Ziya Munyer totaled 11 and Sophia Sparrow pitched in seven. Munyer totaled five blocks while Pratt led with 13 digs. Addison Eastwood totaled 34 assists.

Weber State remains home with a 1 p.m. Saturday match with Northern Arizona (8-7, 1-2).

WSU 1, IDAHO 1

Weber State women’s soccer drew what, on paper, looks like the toughest road trip of conference play to open the slate, traveling to Idaho and Eastern Washington who each led the Big Sky with six nonconference wins.

The Wildcats, voted preseason No. 1, looked like they were going to take a loss to open the conference campaign Thursday night at Idaho. WSU totaled zero shots on goal through 84 minutes.

With time ticking, senior Lily Blum finally got an attempt on frame in the 85th minute, a long-distance rocket that Idaho keeper Paula Flores dove to punch away to the right.

Blum took the ensuing corner kick, dropped it perfectly to freshman Bonnie Buswell across the goal, and Buswell headed it in for a goal in the lower-right corner in the 86th minute, saving a point for WSU in a 1-1 draw.

Lauren Butorac, meanwhile, totaled eight saves to keep Weber State (4-5-2, 0-0-1 Big Sky, 1 point) in position. Idaho’s Caitlyn Riggs scored just before halftime to put the Vandals (6-2-3, 0-0-1, 1 point) in the lead.

WSU next plays at 2 p.m. MDT Sunday at Eastern Washington (6-2-2, 0-0-1, 1 point) after the Eagles knotted 0-0 with Idaho State.
