Weber State receiver Marvin Session (18) tries to evade Cal Poly safety Brian Dukes Jr. (9) on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2024, at Stewart Stadium in Ogden. (Robert Casey, WSU Athletics)Weber State football heads back on the road this weekend for the team’s final night game of the season.
WSU (2-3, 1-1 Big Sky) will face a Cal Poly (3-2, 2-0) team in front of an expected sellout crowd at Spanos Stadium. All of the non-student, publicly available tickets at the 11,075-seat venue sold out as of Wednesday.
The Mustangs are hoping to build on an apparent resurgence under new head coach Tim Skipper, who came to San Luis Obispo after nine games last year as UCLA’s interim head coach, while the Wildcats seem on track to get in yet another one-score game.
MEET THE MUSTANGS
Cal Poly has its guy at quarterback. Fifth-year thrower Anthony Grigsby Jr. (No. 7) is throwing for 229 yards per game, totaling 1,146 yards and 13 touchdowns to four interceptions on a 61.3% completion rate.
Most of the passing game ends in the hands of three receivers with big-play potential. Tayvion McCoy (No. 2) has four touchdowns and averages 84.6 yards per game and 14.1 yards per reception. Fidel Pitts (No. 4) has three touchdowns, averaging 63.6 ypg and 14.5 ypr. And Ray Hall (No. 88) has three touchdowns while averaging 45.8 ypg and 16.4 ypr.
But while Grigsby’s been pretty good running the offense, running back Jaden Green (No. 1) will be the second top-10 FCS rusher Weber State has faced this season. He’s eighth nationally at 122.4 yards per game after hammering Eastern Washington for 269 yards on 28 carries last week, the second-best single-game performance in program history.
Senior linebacker Mikey D’Amato (No. 44) leads the Mustangs with 60 tackles, including 3.5 for loss. On the defensive line, Kaleb Pleis (No. 87) has 3.5 TFLs with a team-high 2.5 sacks.
In the kicking game, Cal Poly switched to Josue Lopez (No. 36) last week and he made a 43-yard field goal; Noah Thayer was 2 for 5 in the previous four games. Punter Dean Scrivner (No. 41) averages 43.9 yards per punt.
