Weber State women’s soccer picked up four points on the road to open the Big Sky schedule last week. But after doing so with uneven play, the team spent most of the week talking about putting together a full 90-minute effort as conference contender Utah Tech came to town.
Mission accomplished.
Fifth-year forward Sayler Schlosser, recently reinstated via court order, scored in the 2nd minute and Weber State was off to the races in a 5-0 drubbing of the Trailblazers on Thursday night at Wildcat Soccer Field.
It’s only the second time in the last eight seasons WSU has scored five or more goals in a Big Sky Conference game, and both came under head coach Kyle Christensen. WSU beat Sacramento State 6-0 last season, which is the program record for goals scored in a conference game.
The numbers behind the score were a bit staggering. Weber State scored on 5 of its 6 shots on goal, and outshot Utah Tech 18-8. WSU kept UTU to just one shot on frame. Weber also had a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Schlosser got things started with a one-timer from well beyond the box, hooking past UTU keeper Elle Rafajko in the lower-left corner to put Weber State (6-5-2, 2-0-1, 7 points) on the board.
In the ninth minute, senior Lily Blum got the first of her two goals on an assist from Amanda Caswell, using her left foot from the right side to go top shelf.
Blum’s second came in the 32nd minute when Schlosser put one in front of the net on a sprint from the left side, and Blum headed it in.
Utah Tech (6-5-1, 2-1, 6 points) changed keepers to Emma McIff at halftime but to no avail. Simone Packer netted in the 62nd minute after McIff gave the ball away in the box and Buswell gave to Packer for a lefty liner.
Cici Garcia scored in the 67th minute when a cross from the corner went off McIff’s hands, then two heads into the net, with Garcia’s the final header.
With daunting weather in the forecast, Weber State is scheduled to host Southern Utah (4-6-2, 1-1-1, 4 points) at 1 p.m. Sunday.
UTU 3, WSU 1
Things didn’t go as well for Weber State volleyball, who tripped to St. George to take on the Trailblazers.
The Wildcats fell to 9-6 overall and 2-3 in the Big Sky in a 23-25, 25-22, 25-12, 25-20 defeat at league-leading Utah Tech.
WSU won the first set but Utah Tech (12-3, 5-0) hammered the Wildcats in the third set on the way to a convincing victory. The Trailblazers outhit the Wildcats .258 to .132 in likely WSU’s least-efficient hitting day of the season.
UTU also served eight aces to WSU’s two. Junior Sydney Reese led the match with 17 kills for the home team.
Rose Moore led Weber with 14 kills and Maggie Larsen added 12. Freshman hitter Lexie Carlson played just one set, totaling four kills. Addison Eastwood passed 39 assists and Marly Pratt totaled 15 digs.
Weber State is next at Southern Utah on Saturday.
