After streamrolling the Aggies (0-8) in the first set, the night looked like it might get away from the Wildcats (6-2) in the fourth set when USU went up 19-17, just a sequence away from taking the match.

But soon, three consecutive kills from senior Rose Moore put WSU up 22-19 and Eastern Washington transfer Tennille Gonder put away the set with a kill, forcing a fifth frame.

That train kept chugging in the fifth and WSU took a 9-3 lead on consecutive kills from freshman Lexie Carlson. Freshman and Weber High alum Sophia Sparrow recorded the final point with a kill to give Weber the victory.

WSU outhit USU .317 to .212 to overcome the Aggies’ 11 aces.

Moore finished with 20 kills, Gonder added 12 and Carlson pitched in 11. Ziya Munyer recorded three blocks and Moore had 2.5. Morgan Pratt passed out 44 assists and Marly Pratt led with 17 digs.

Things ramp up at 6 p.m. Thursday with No. 24 BYU coming to Swenson Gym.

MBB hires assistant general manager

Kaleb Canales has hired an assistant general manager to his Weber State men’s basketball staff.

John Ross has arrived to join Canales’ staff, the coach told the Standard-Examiner.

Ross spent 15 years on staff with the Portland Trail Blazers, largely as the team’s video coordinator, and was part of the group that zeroed in on Damian Lillard as a draft pick.

Ross most recently spent two seasons coaching in Canada’s CEBL as an assistant coach with Calgary and Brampton. He joins Lillard on Weber State’s general manager team.

Weber State unofficially begins the season in one month’s time, hosting Colorado Christian in an exhibition on Oct. 17.

Football preps for home opener

With Weber State football preparing for its home opener this weekend (6 p.m. Saturday against Northwestern State), the Wildcats’ Game 4 depth chart has few changes from last week as freshman Nate Dahle is expected to start at quarterback for the third straight game.

Key differences come in the defensive backfield where WSU has dealt with injuries. Weber High alum Ian Elmore is now listed as the backup to fifth-year player Trevian Tribble at free safety, and freshman Denzel Peoples is now backup to Bones Marks at one cornerback spot.

The other main change comes in the kick return game, largely removing the receiver workhorse Noah Kjar from those reps. As was the case in the game at Colorado, Robert Young was joined by running back Seth Rigtrup as kick returners, and Young is now listed as the starting punt returner.
