Garret Rushforth

Garret Rushforth is a Democratic candidate for the Senate District 7 seat. Below are his responses to a six-question survey sent to him by the Standard-Examiner. The Standard-Examiner made an attempt to contact each candidate involved in a competitive race in Weber and Davis counties.

1. Why is the position you are running for important?

Utah is very unique in that it has a citizen-led legislature. As such, this position is one of sacred trust in which community members have an actual opportunity to represent their communities in the lawmaking process. We have had too few leaders who actually are members of their communities and we need a change.

2. What unique qualities, attributes, skills, and experiences do you possess that make you the best candidate in this race?

I am currently a public school teacher who has experienced work in a variety of roles, including office work, blue-collar work, and community arts. I am connected to this community in ways that few people are. As such, I believe I understand and know how to connect with constituents and fairly represent them in a way that will make every person feel represented fairly.

3. Please explain your priorities if elected, as well as why you believe you are uniquely capable of achieving those priorities.

My priorities will be the restoration of great Salt Lake and affordability in housing and transportation. There are many other issues that I would like to address as well. I am uniquely capable of addressing these because I have valuable expert connections across the state and the country, as well as an understanding of how these issues actually affect the average Utahn. Especially those who live on the banks of the great Salt Lake and those of a younger demographic who will inherit this state.

4. Please describe how you view the importance of compromise in politics and provide an example from your own experiences that highlights your perspective.

Compromise and collaboration are essential in successful lawmaking. If we are not willing to hear out every side of an argument, we cannot have the full picture. In my work as a public educator, I am regularly required to collaborate with students and parents and administration in order to be able to make sure that the educational needs of all my students are met.

5. How will you balance the views of the vocal public, your political party, and your own understanding and knowledge as an elected representative?

I am beholden to my conscience and my constituents. I will work with experts and individuals who have stake in the success of the legislation that is being brought forward to understand each point of view and perspective. I cannot afford to be the smartest person in the room. But I will ask the questions that matter to my constituents.

6. What is the best way for readers to contact you and/or get more information about your platform?

The best way to get a hold of me is via my website: voterushforth.com. You can also follow me on my social media, @rushforth4utah
