ROY — Two schools were evacuated Monday after a potential weapon was found in the parking lot of one.
According to Sgt. Josh Taylor of the Roy City Police Department, a device was found in the parking lot of Roy High School around 7 a.m. Monday.
“There was a detonated flash-bang device that was located this morning at Roy High,” he told the Standard-Examiner. “Out of an abundance of caution, the school was evacuated — no students were being allowed in — until the school could be searched and gone through to make sure there were no other devices or anything like that.”
He said that no other suspicious or dangerous items were found in the search of the school. Nearby Sand Ridge Junior School was also evacuated out of an abundance of caution. Both schools were back to normal operation around 10 a.m. Monday.
Taylor said that the flash-bang device found was one that can be purchased for training scenarios or by Airsoft hobbyists.
“At this time, I don’t know that we have any idea of where it came from or who it belonged to, and that will all be part of our investigation,” he said.
The incident remains under investigation and no further information is available at this time.
