This year's Creatures of the Night event at Ogden Nature Center will be held Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 18-19, 2024.

OGDEN — Just ahead of the Halloween holiday, the naturalist educators at Ogden Nature Center will once again embody creatures that literally go bump in the night.

The nature center’s annual Creatures of the Night event is set to return Oct. 18-19. from 5-8:30 p.m. each night, providing children and families an opportunity to learn about some of the Beehive State’s nocturnal natives.

Brandi Bosworth, Ogden Nature Center’s communications manager, told the Standard-Examiner that attendees will be guided around trails near the visitor center on a “Crepuscular Creep” where they’ll encounter teacher-naturalists costumed as nocturnal animals.

“It’s educational. They’re talking about what that animal might eat, what it might hunt, what habitat it needs to survive, where it lives — those sorts of things,” Bosworth said.

According to Bosworth, costumes are still being finalized but some of the “creatures” that might be seen include the great blue heron, black-footed ferret, northern flying squirrel, moths, bats and others.

The event includes a myriad of additional activities. Attendees can see and learn about live owls, snakes and spiders. There also will be a “Spider Web Crawl,” a “Squeak-n-Sneak Walk” with flashlights, a fortune teller, campfire stories, games and crafts.

Meanwhile, students from the University of Utah’s Chemical Engineering Outreach program will be on hand as “mad scientists.”

Food truck options will include Lucky Slice Pizza, Duncan Bros. and Happy Tummie.

Tickets for the all-ages, rain-or-shine event will be available at the entrance: $7 for nature center members or $10 for non-members. Bosworth says attendees should dress for the weather; also, costumes are encouraged.

“So many events are scary at Halloween,” Bosworth added. “This is non-scary and educational and fun. And it’s kind of a different time of day to see the nature center, too.”
