“The Better Sister” premiered Thursday, May 29, 2025, and can be streamed on Prime Video.

Jessica Biel and Elizabeth Banks star in “The Better Sister” on Prime Video. This eight-episode miniseries is based on the novel by Alafair Burke and provides viewers with plenty of drama from start to finish.

Chloe (Biel) is a successful media executive married to Adam (Corey Stoll), a successful lawyer in Manhattan. Together with their son, Ethan (Maxwell Acre Donovan), the family lives a lavish life in a New York penthouse with a second home on Long Island. They are the perfect family on the outside, but they are all hiding deep family secrets that will eventually come out during the eight episodes.

When Chloe returns home from a party, she discovers Adam’s bloody body. From there, the story gets intriguing, not only for the viewers but also for the characters. The police contact Chloe’s sister Nicky (Banks) in Ohio, who immediately comes to New York to be with her family, even though the sisters have basically been estranged for years.

As the investigation into the gruesome murder of Adam ramps up, the detectives delve into the lives of Chloe, Nicky, Ethan and others in their inner circle. The two detectives on the case, Nancy Guidry (Kim Dickens) and Matt Bowen (Bobby Naderi), have different theories about the murder. Bowen is a little more sensitive to the family than Guidry, who is like a bull in a china shop when it comes to dealing with the family and potential suspects.

Once a suspect is in custody, the sisters decide to do their own investigating to find out who really murdered Adam and, more importantly, why. Chloe is determined to unravel the mysterious case her husband was working on prior to his death. Something is suspicious about his work and Chloe thinks it is the reason he was killed. But that is not what the police think.

Nicky and Chloe are very different. While Chloe is an upstanding citizen and successful businesswoman, Nicky is a boozing druggie who is now putting her life back together. In the beginning, they butt heads at every turn. But as the story unravels, they become closer and find the sibling bond they once had.

There are some interesting twists throughout the show. The trial is amazing. And the ending is also memorable with plenty of twists and some very ingenious and well-thought-out actions by Chloe, who manages to tie everything up with a nice little bow. She plays a mental chess game keeping one step in front of the detectives and playing out a dangerous but interesting game.

By the end of the eighth episode, viewers will have all the answers to all the relationships and business dealings and might want to see another season with the two sisters continuing their lives now that they have found their way back to each other. But according to my source at Prime Video, this is a miniseries with no thoughts of any more stories. It is a simple series with eight powerful, dramatic and clever episodes.
